Just experienced a Toby Carvery breakfast for the first time. They have gravy. And Yorkshire puddings. For breakfast. I feel like crying with happiness it was so delicious.

(DH said I was eating like it was my first meal after coming out of the jungle Blush )

I hate it when you go somewhere for Sunday roast at someone's house and you only get a tiny bit of gravy. Mean!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/03/2018 10:49

I agree, @CavoliRiscaldati - it would be awful if the meat was dry and tough, but it isn't.

I do occasionally make gravy from scratch, for special occasions (generally just once a year, at Christmas) and that is nice, but I don't have much of it even then - I like to taste the different things on my plate, without them all tasting of gravy, and I like the crispy things, like the roast potatoes and yorkshires, to stay crispy.

Ohhh god, I am turning into my mother!! I haven't banned dh and the dses from having gravy whenever they want it, but I do find myself thinking what she used to say - why did I bother cooking something nice if it is going to be drowned in Bisto? Help - kill me now!!

iklboo

The worst type of gravy is jus.

I went for Sunday lunch with relatives in a pub down South and got given the teeniest pot of gravy (note: more or less clear runny jus), a steak piece and boiled, BOILED potatoes. A silent tear may have fell onto my plate in disappointment 😢

Jus is an abomination masquerading as gravy. 'Piss watter with pretensions' my grandad called it 😊

tillytrotter1 · 01/03/2018 11:48

We went to a breakfast buffet in the States which was really the lunch set up with some breakfast items as well, the children were in heaven. The photo of granddaughter eating an ice-cream with a sausage stuck in it will haunt her when she's older.

slippynips · 01/03/2018 11:58

OP do they still do that amazing potato hash with roasties, garlic, onion and cheese? That’s the stuff dreams are made of Grin

Loyaultemelie · 01/03/2018 11:59

Niceandwarm I'm impressed that there's somewhere that does veggie roasts!
I do love gravy though

StephiD3 · 01/03/2018 13:29

I love Toby for lunch and brekky. Sadly my local one has closed and turned into some kind of steakhouse. I'm all for a bit of steak but there are loads of places I can get a really good one. Not many decent carveries about. It was a bit hit and miss but on a good day it was fab!

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 01/03/2018 14:41

Apparently now KFC have run out of gravy as well as chicken. Only just discovered how lush KFC gravy is and then it all went tits up!

frankchickens · 01/03/2018 14:45

YABVVVVVVVVVVVU I am not having gravy for breakfast.

StephiD3 · 01/03/2018 17:34

I’m having roast dinner for tea too.

Living the life 😎

Thanks entirely to this thread, I have just had individual,Yorkshire’s with golden syrup for pudding. It has blown the diet out of the water, but I do not care. We have drifts of snow knee deep outside the house, dh is away until tomorrow - and will only get home if the airport reopens, and I don’t think the cat has been outdoors in 48 hours (I don’t know if he is crapping and peeing in the house, or if he just has truly ironclad self control) - and I spent ages shovelling out paths yesterday and today, only for it to bastarding snow again, so I deserved every single, delicious, sweet, crunchy calorie.

iklboo · 01/03/2018 21:22

Hmmm. I'm pondering Ben & Jerry's caramel chew chew ice cream in a Yorkshire with syrup on now......

cardibach · 01/03/2018 21:29

SDT has give. Us the answer to the no gravy brigade! why did I bother cooking something nice if it is going to be drowned in Bisto? Help - kill me now! Bisto is not gravy! Proper gravy is delicious and doesn’t make everything taste the same at all. Bistro is vile and chemically and spoils everything.

monkeysox · 01/03/2018 21:33

Toby breakfast gravy is ketchup gravy.

It's OK
Not a fan of Dry food so I get to eat more 😂

Niceandwarmandhot · 01/03/2018 21:33

Loyaul - oh yes, it's quite popular now!! Varies massively though. Sometimes it's a fab nut roast or mushroom Wellington or something. Other times it's just extra veg (insert sad wah wah wah trumpet noise here)

StephiD3 · 01/03/2018 22:02

Proper gravy has lovely meat juices in Grin

Don’t know how I feel about syrup on yorkies, but I’m not a sweet person. I bet my kids would love that though!

If I’d had cream, I would have had whipped cream with my Yorkshires and golden syrup.

Incidentally - the best thing I ever saw at a hotel breakfast was the accompaniments for the porridge - there was cream, and golden syrup, and Bell’s whisky! I had my porridge with cream and syrup, but felt that before 9am was a bit early for whisky - and it wasn’t even nice whisky.

Grilledaubergines · 01/03/2018 23:32

I’m so envious reading about Toby Carvery. We don’t have one anywhere remotely near to us Sad

MorningsEleven · 01/03/2018 23:32

DS would kill for that. I could pour gravy on a shoe an he'd eat it.
