Door doesn't lock help!

My front door doesn't lock anymore- I live alone with 2 small children, I told the landlord the minute I discovered the problem (it shuts and seemed locked but can be pushed open) and they've told me it will be Friday before they could possibly get someone out but maybe not till Monday Aibu to think that's completely unacceptable!? We've had already had issues with them leaving heating/hot water repairs but this really takes the cake! We also don't like in area super hard hit by the snow

A locksmith could be out within a couple of hours if your landlord was responsible and actually gave a shit . Total knob. Sorry op :(

clumsyduck · 01/03/2018 00:10

Also as a bit of peice of mind you could get some upvc extra security locks if you can tommrow from bnq extra there like a kind of latch thing that go on top of door and Windows . You shouldn't have to but will make u feel more secure if your landlord really won't do anything till Monday

clumsyduck · 01/03/2018 00:11

Ignore the "extra" no idea were that came from

StillMe1 · 01/03/2018 00:40

If you can you could lean the ironing board against the door. There would be an awful lot of noise if anyone tried to get in.
Wedging a sturdy piece of wood against the door is a good idea. I knew someone who did that for years with no problems.
Landlords have an obligation to make sure that houses are safe and a lack of door lock is important

Backscratchesforever · 01/03/2018 02:38

Does your tenancy agreement not have anything in it about security etc?
Block the door with a sofa/fridge?
Just make sure all adapters are turned off and that no candles etc are lit.
I’d be calling citizens advice in the AM to see where you stand.

NoSquirrels · 01/03/2018 05:43

OK - as PigletJihn says, you can replace a Yale lock easily on a wooden door, and if there’s a handyman neighbour even better. I am concerned though that you don’t have another way of locking the door - Yale-only is rarely sufficient fir insurance purposes, you need another lock too. So if you can pick one up at the same time as the Yale that would be the best solution- then LL’s person can fit that when they finally show up...

confusedlittleone · 01/03/2018 05:57

Yup the agreement says we can't pay and charge it back unfortunately

I had a look round, and the cheapest BS nightlatch I could find (a good one from a reputable maker) is this at £41. There is probably a store near you or they will deliver.

The cheapest "traditional" nightlatch is £11 in the high street. This type is not much good.

HateTheDF · 01/03/2018 10:22

I have changed a yale lock myself with no prior experience. It was easy, fairly cheap and I had it done in 5 mins. Is there anyone who could pick you up a lock?

BarbaraofSevillle · 01/03/2018 10:29

When we found our door didn't lock a couple of weeks ago, we made a temporary fix with one of these until we could source a full replacement lock because we discovred it on Saturday afternoon while B&Q was still open but all the specialist window places had shut until Monday.

Jon66 · 02/03/2018 01:41

It doesn't matter what your tenancy agreement says, you CAN pay for the locksmith and deduct it from the rent. This is disrepair and the landlord has a statutory duty to ensure the property is secure and fit to live in. That means he must secure the property under the law. He cannot contract out of his statutory duties and this is an emergency.

Bexter801 · 02/03/2018 01:49

Can you get a locksmith out and get him to send invoice to label of? Depending where you live can you apply for crisis loan,to fund it?

Bexter801 · 02/03/2018 01:50

Sorry label of,is meant to say landlord!

confusedlittleone · 02/03/2018 05:55

The door is fixed, they also gave us our eviction notice 😢

OP posts:
Bexter801 · 02/03/2018 06:27

What's their reasoning? How much notice

NoSquirrels · 02/03/2018 07:35

Oh blimey!

Has it all been served properly? They have to do it exactly by the letter of the law. Go to Shelter/CAB and find out options.

There are good LLs out there. I hope you find a much better place. Flowers

witchofzog · 02/03/2018 09:20

Wankers. This has made me so cross. Did they say why? I know this affects medical treatment which is even worse

specialsubject · 02/03/2018 09:37

OK, so revenge eviction, no smoke alarms, illegal entry. Forget shelter who do nothing, read the how to rent guide to avoid the next slumlord and get house hunting.

If you live in a landlord license area you could report but it is a waste of time, no enforcement.

Jon66 · 03/03/2018 11:37

There are some technical defences to a s21 notice, I.e. no gas safety cert, not proper notice, and stuff. See your local law centre or shelter and speak to the housing and homelessness dept at your la. There are good landlords out there, sorry yours is breaking the law on pretty much everything.

specialsubject · 03/03/2018 13:53

Good point . if you weren't served with a gas safe cert , an epc and how to rent then the section 21 is invalid. The landlord needs to prove service. Dont flag this up, you want them to cock up.

There's a penalty for no smoke alarm. Retaliatory eviction is harder to prove without a complaint already made to the council, as there is no enforcement. But the judge will check the section 21.

By then you will hopefully be long gone.
