UKtvsdirect - scam?

DH bought a TV online, thought he’d got a good deal (as it’s a 3D telly, and they were selling cheap because nobody wants them now)

They were supposed to deliver this afternoon, when nothing arrived teenage DD went online and immediately said ‘it’s a scam’ DH tried phoning them and the line is dead. Their website has disappeared.

AIBU to think we’ve been scammed?

DH is gutted - he’s lost all that money AND he hasn’t got his shiny new AND he feels like an idiot for falling for it.

It does look a bit dodgy, but I wouldn’t panic, as long as he paid by cars or PayPal, he will get his money back. Just contact your provider.

19lottie82 · 28/02/2018 20:12

Cars? Card!

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/02/2018 20:12

Did he pay by credit card? If so, he could get his money back as a section 75 claim. Even if he paid by debit card, there's hope as he could ask his bank to do a chargeback.

Have a look here

Good luck

On trustpilot there seems to be a mixed bag of reviews. Search for other numbers or emails and try first. If not contact the bank and they can help.

FYI There are only a few films that are made in 3D and you need to wear special glasses to view the content. The technology is still in the early stages. Most TV and film content is in the normal 2D. I am sorry you have been caught by a scam. If you paid via credit card you could try getting your money back ?

19lottie82 · 28/02/2018 20:30

sn0w 3D TVs were released a few years ago, you can watch 2D TV on them too, but they never really took off.

aliasjoey · 28/02/2018 21:11

He says he didn’t pay by card but bank transfer?

You can still watch ordinary Tv on a 3D telly, plus he does like the 3D sometimes.

He just feels like an idiot Sad

Bank transfer?

That screams "scam" to me, sorry.

19lottie82 · 28/02/2018 21:14

Oh dear....... if he paid by bank transfer then he’s lost it I’m agraid. I don’t mean to patronise, but surely it’s common sense you don’t pay for goods online this way?

Expensive lesson learned I’m afraid. Sad

Frogthefrog · 28/02/2018 21:15

Why would you pay for goods online via bank transfer?? That is surely not normal and a huge red flag.

JustHooking · 28/02/2018 21:21

My foolish DH bought a TV from a scam company
Luckily he wasn't so foolish not to use his card and we got refunded
What on earth was he thinking paying by bank transfer.

aliasjoey · 28/02/2018 21:47

Oh god, I feel so bad for him - he was treating himself because he got a big bonus at work. I wasn’t aware that a bank transfer is less secure, although he should have been because he often buys stuff online. I think he was just convinced he was getting a good deal.

He knew I wasn’t keen on the big tv, so bought me a necklace... I will admit I teased him this evening by asking if he’d got it from a real jewellers, not some dodgy online place Grin

Googling seems to show this is a scam

I asked DH about the payment - the website had a clever trick to fool customers. Apparently, he did select PayPal (he doesn’t have a credit card) and the screen went to bank transfer.

He assumed he’d clicked the wrong button, but it was easier just to keep going so he carried on. It’s all very sneaky. God knows how much time and effort is put into designing these websites, it really did look legit.

hotcrossbunsandtea · 01/03/2018 20:12

Never pay anything online via bank transfer - you have no comeback AT ALL if it goes wrong.

Expensive mistake made by your DH.

19lottie82 · 01/03/2018 20:20

he did select PayPal (he doesn’t have a credit card) and the screen went to bank transfer

I wouldn’t really call it a “clever trick”, it’s basic common, but as I said lesson learned in this instance.

Again I’m not meaning being patronising but your OH should really try to brush up his knowledge on what to look out for in regards to scam sites.

aliasjoey · 01/03/2018 21:04

I know, he’s gutted - and feels like a real fool! I think if they had only given the bank transfer option, he would have been suspicious - but because it gave the appearance that he’d just clicked the wrong button he was taken in.

I’m so sorry for him, he was like a kid on Christmas morning excited about opening his presents... only to be totally let down. He’s too embarrassed to tell people, but I think it’s best to spread the word and stop other people being scammed Sad if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is
