School taking kids out of class to sledge.

AIBU to think this is bloody marvellous?

Our fantastic infant school took nearly all the kids out sledging/snowman building/playing outside on the school field that has a slope on yesterday.
Makeshift sledges were constructed from bin bags and the kids all have school provided waterproofs.

Reading today about some schools not allowing children to play in the snow has made me appreciate our little school all the more. The head said she wants the kids to look back on their time at Infants and have happy memories Smile

I think learning matters. That is why they go to school. They could have done this at lunchtime. But I wouldn't complain to the school just inwardly roll my eyes.

Beehivesandhoney · 28/02/2018 15:04

I saw footage of an infant school versus teacher snowball fight this morning and it looked amazing!

Willow2017 · 28/02/2018 15:04

When mine were in primary they went to park and made sculptures and had snowball wars from 'forts' and teachers joined in😀

Dumbledoresgirl · 28/02/2018 15:05

I think they are learning when they are out in the snow. All sorts of things.

We have no snow here yet but I am pleased to report that the last time it snowed here, four or five years ago, my youngest was at primary and they spent most of the day out on the school field playing and having snowman competitions.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 28/02/2018 15:06

I agree that learning matters, there's not many that won't but how often do we get snow? It's a one off and something the kids will remember fondly.

Willow2017 · 28/02/2018 15:07

I think they should be learning.

Of course because one day in 13 years is going to make such a huge impact on thier education and future prospects forever🤔

RedAndGreenPlaid · 28/02/2018 15:14

Well, ours was a games lesson- they were running around, sliding and balancing, throwing, and catching too Hmm
It's a one-off, they were learning, learning how in some situations rules can be suspended and everyone mucks in together.

RedAndGreenPlaid · 28/02/2018 15:17

See it as an outdoor science lesson- friction (and lack of it), vectors, and properties of materials in different states of matter. There's nothing like real-life situations to demonstrate book learning. Wink

anxious2017 · 28/02/2018 15:18

Ahh, crunchymint. You're one of those parents we talk about in the staff room Wink

RainbowGlitterFairy · 28/02/2018 15:19

Fantastic, brave teachers taking them sledging though, I've just got back from the park with DD and trying to get through to her that she needs to look where shes walking and not walk in front of people coming down the hill was awful without having to try and keep an eye on 30+ children!

movinonup · 28/02/2018 15:21

I think that is fabulous! :)

Penguinsandpandas · 28/02/2018 15:23

My 2 would be jealous, think its great. DDs school was open despite heavy snow and no public transport even with no heating as it failed and only got sent home when it hit -5 and they legally had to shut. Kept in at lunchtime. Your school sounds a lot more fun but crunchymint would love DDs grammar Grin

MrsMozart · 28/02/2018 15:24

That's what it is to be a child Grin

FakeMews · 28/02/2018 15:25

The very best sledge substitute is a lilo, actually better than a real sledge.

notapizzaeater · 28/02/2018 15:27

Our ofsted outstanding villAge school does this - love it, the fun and socialising, teamwork etc they had was far better than any classroom learning they could have.

babyblackbird · 28/02/2018 15:29

We are expecting snow tomorrow / Friday and the school have already emailed to say they will be open come what may but that they won't be sticking to strict lessons all day as they expect lots not to make it in and that children should come prepared to do activities in the snow.

I think that's brilliant.

bostonkremekrazy · 28/02/2018 15:36

we are expecting snow - none yet - schools have already emailed to say they will be closed tomorrow!

no fun in that....I prefer your schools approach OP :)

LadyRoughDiamond · 28/02/2018 15:37

At pick up yesterday I had a giggle when I saw there was actually hardly any snow left after 200 bodies had trampled it, rolled in it, thrown it and made some terrific snowmen. Fantastic!

Hardwickwhite · 28/02/2018 15:42

DC are all secondary now, but the last time we had serious snow here (7 or 8 years ago I think?) the headteacher took everyone out to build snowmen on the field. I loved that School!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 28/02/2018 15:43

I suspect ours were kept inside, as they were letting them out one by one when they saw their parents. They're at childcare/playscheme now, so I haven't had a chance to ask them.

Jobjobjob · 28/02/2018 15:44

I think they should be learning

They were learning! How to sledge!

ManicUnicorn · 28/02/2018 15:45

That's brilliant OP. Sadly the school I work in decided to keep them cooped up inside all day due to 'health and safety concerns '. They were climbing the walls come lunchtime. A combination of not being able to get outside, run around and let off steam and the fact that snow makes them even more hyper than usual. They looked so crestfallen when we told them they couldn't go out and play in it.

TheNecroscope · 28/02/2018 15:49

When I was at junior school many many years ago I remember the teachers taking us into the playground and everyone worked together to build an igloo out of blocks of snow. It was absolutely brilliant, and I remember it so clearly 30+ years later. Can remember very little else of junior school. We get proper snow so rarely in this country I think it's a very sensible school that realises excitable children are far better off running round in the snow than fidgeting and miserable in the classroom.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/02/2018 15:50

YANBU - it’s marvellous.

PickAChew · 28/02/2018 15:52

They were learning and getting exercise! It's not like any concentration happens when there's snow out.
