Unaceptable taking a "snow day" when schools are open

Creambun2 · 28/02/2018 11:28

It really annoys me that the vast majority of schools are open in my area, yet many, many children have been taken out of school by parents "to enjoy the snow". Talk about lack of respect for the staff and other pupils who bother to turn up. We only have a couple of cm of snow!

OP posts:

I think you only posted this op because you're bored shitless at home and wanted to entertain yourself. Get out in the snow, it's so much more fun.

5plusMeAndHim · 28/02/2018 13:43

It doesn't happen that often. It doesn't affect you.Butt out!

I have no idea what your points are here or why you are so hell bent on alienating other parents because you will you know when you turn up in reception class with that attitude.

You have a pre school child, teachers in your family and you help decorate the classroom.

Basically you have done what most of us have done as pta members. My sister is a HT and I was a TA.... so what! Doesn’t make my parenting choices superior to other people’s.

Honestly take some advice from those who have been there and rein it in.

(No one is saying that schools must stay open at all cost by the way, just mocking the lazy parents who feel overwhelmed about walking 20 minutes and prefer to keep their kids in front of the TV)

Where I am walking 20 mins (which would only get you half way to school) would involve trudging through knee deep snow over sheet ice. Damn straight I'd rather they were in front of the tv! Does that make me lazy?

I don't know about you but my days are lots lazier when the children are at school...

Bimbler · 28/02/2018 13:48

and the types of parents that are a PITA!

Yes, we all have an idea of the types of parents that are a pain in the posterior...

IpreferFrieda · 28/02/2018 13:49

Mmmm well my local first school was over 3 miles away so I don’t think I could have done that in 20 mins with 5 children.

Do some posters live in very very small villages? Wink

Wauden · 28/02/2018 13:52

Been snowing heavily for a hour here; working at home today so I won't be stranded on the roads.

PeerieBreeks · 28/02/2018 13:52

Our local authority is very clear that the onus is in the parents to make the decision as to whether to send children to school in winter weather. The local authority can't know what the conditions are in every inch of the catchment area (which is a large area, rural school).

I think YABU.

Sallystyle · 28/02/2018 13:53

Mine wanted the day off yesterday but I refused. Knowing it was going to get worse today. School is shut today but if it wasn't I would have allowed them a day off today anyway. Its my day off, so no hardship for me.

Yes, people who work in certain jobs have very little choice to go in. I am one of those people. My children don't have jobs and they are only young once. A day off for the snow, which is something we rarely get, just isn't a problem.

Hippymama · 28/02/2018 13:54

My eldest is in school, but I kept my youngest off as the road conditions where I live aren't great and I am not confident about driving up and down the ungritted hills where I live. My eldest qualifies for a school bus so he will come home on that.

Do us a favour. Show your parents this thread- report back please Grin

happy2bhomely · 28/02/2018 13:59

My 3 youngest dc (4,8,9) have spent the day so far building a snowman, spraying coloured water over the snow and poking a frozen pond. They have had brilliant fun. They are now watching How To Train Your Dragon. We home ed so we get judged all day every day by people who think they should be in school. Grin

The eldest 2 have gone to school. They moaned a bit but I promised to have a hot choc and cheese toastie ready for when they get back. The eldest has AS mocks coming up so he knows that he can't afford the time off. The younger one went along mainly to keep him company on the 20 minute walk!

I really couldn't bring myself to get worked up over other people's children missing a day of school.

Itchytights · 28/02/2018 14:00

Beep

Cost of elf n safety and darling little snowflake falling over init?

So, no , not all get to play outside in breaks and lunch.

onemorecakeplease · 28/02/2018 14:00

My school (work) was closed first but I would have kept the children at home if there’s wasn’t! We so rarely get snow it’s lovely for them to get the chance to play in it.

Itchytights · 28/02/2018 14:00

cos not cost

Thinking you know best? Superiority? Belittling other people's experiences? Assumptions? Dishing out "advice"? Thanks Frieda, another full house there in the parent bingo box Grin

Surely those who think snow is the most important thing should be out in it with their kids anyway, not posting on here? Confused

CavoliRiscaldati · 28/02/2018 14:00

No, in the South East commuter town where it is quite safe to walk 40 minutes in the snow without risking frost bites and bear attacks.

beepthemeep · 28/02/2018 14:01

sure Valentina. Got a ouija board I can borrow?

Sallystyle · 28/02/2018 14:02

Nah, I have five of them. They are all out with their friends playing in it.

They don't need me.

tinkywinky2018 · 28/02/2018 14:03

Good for you, but you're aware we don't all live where you live, yes? I'm in a red alert area.

MiddleAgedMe · 28/02/2018 14:04

Oh bah humbug! Let the kids have some fun in the snow...it happens like once every two years!!

beepbeepsnow · 28/02/2018 14:04

All of the school in my town are closed.. except ours!
Me and a lot of other parents haven't sent our children because roads aren't safe, or it's just too far to walk.

I'm heavily pregnant, DC are 4 and 6. We live 30 minutes from school, I don't drive. Buses and taxis have been cancelled. Also when the sun reflects off the snow, its a trigger for my epilepsy.

I didn't send them as a matter of safety for myself and my unborn baby. Also because it's bloody freezing!

They went out with my mum for literally 10 minutes and came back crying and frozen because they were so cold, even in FOUR layers.. I can't imagine how cold they would've been if we had walked 30 minutes to school!

Bimbler · 28/02/2018 14:04

Beep, you seem to be getting a bit overheated. Off to the garden with you and have a roll about in some of that lovely soothing snow.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 28/02/2018 14:05

My DGM couldn't drive me to school one day because of the snow, that's a valid excuse. Keeping them off to enjoy the snow? I couldn't live with myself.
