Dd(10) had an attack Sunday and a second attack Monday. Saw GP as advised yesterday morning, peak flow was still very low 220 but that was an increase from 170 on Sunday/Monday. We were with the GP for along time and he prescribed prednisolone tablets for the next 5 days and blue inhaler every 4 hours given in spacer, he was concerned over the peak flow and restricted airways. There was no sign of infection so antibiotics not needed. 24 hours on there is no improvement the peak flow is around 210 and she is taking very shallow breathes if she takes a deep breath she struggles to recover from it and barks the only thing I can describe it as is like a seal. She is using the blue inhaler in the spacer more than four hourly and was woken in the night with a tight chest. She has had 2 doses of prednisolone never had them before so don't know how long they take to work. I know GP appointments are few and far between but would I be unreasonable to ask for another emergency appointment today? Her peak flow is normal over 300.

OP I nearly died from an asthma attack, take her to a&e and refuse to move until they help her. Best of luck and hope she feels better soon.

Hope you got some treatment for your daughter Flowers
How is she doing?

Take her to A&E asap. They’ll measure her saturation and give her nebulisers / oxygen as required - the steroids do kick in quickly ime, but she needs to be closely monitored.

I would go to a and e. Even though our local one is a bit crap!

They have everything they need there, and the doctors with the right paediatric expertise.

I do with my asthmatic dd when necessary (i.e. in situations like yours) and they always say I've done the right thing.

Asthma attacks that don't get better with the treatments you have are one of the things that a and e is for. You will not be one of the time wasters!

Please also don’t just rely on sats with asthma. My daughters SATs can sit at 96% and her peak flow will be less than 60 and she can be working very hard, especially at the beginning of an attack and need back to back nebs and IV asthma meds.

The hospital can also check the dose of the pred as GPS were giving too little. She needs to be seen in A and E if she can’t stretch to 4 hourly inhalers as that’s a worrying sign.

Glad you are getting seen.

If she's getting it alot, or missing alot of school, ask them about montelukast and / or a different preventer/ reliever.

My dd got montelukast in October after loads of absence and it's made such a difference. It may be more likely to be recommended if there's and allergic element to the asthma though. But we had to ask about it in order to get it!
