To think that my children really will eat better if i buy a nutra bullet type machine?

Im really trying to cut down on the crap we are all eating at home, and improve the variety of food we are all trying.

Tonight i gave my eldest a recipe book and asked him to choose 3 new recipes and one he chose was a smoothie.

I have a hand blender but love the idea of us all devouring beetroot, kale and puy lentil smoothies or something like that.

Has anyone else upped their families vitamin intake successfully like this?

I know quite a few people who were wildly enthusiastic to begin with. Have seen and heard nothing of their machines lately. I suppose they have ended up in the cupboard with all the other faddish stuff like spiralisers and George Foreman grills.

ferriswheel · 27/02/2018 21:19

I was wondering that. I guess my hope is they drink their five a day for breakfast. I love the idea of getting all that goodness in them as a real vitamin boost to start the day.

They're a pain in the arse to wash, so I eventually stopped using mine. The blades in the bottom are fuckers.

ferriswheel · 27/02/2018 21:20

That does sound annoying. How long before you got bored of it?

Audreyhelp · 27/02/2018 21:20

Mine was used for a month then some more clutter for the corner cupboard.

BzyB · 27/02/2018 21:21

We have the Lidl one and it’s great and only £30.
We mostly use it for crushing ice or blending soup, despite great enthusiasm initially!
We just found that the only tasty ones we made were mostly fruit and it’s much healthier to eat the whole fruit rather than have it blended up.

But if you think your kids will drink veg based ones, it could be worth a try!

hattyhighlighter · 27/02/2018 21:22

I've got one and dcs drink drinks with greens (and fruit) in It has worked for us, very easy to use no mess. One of the best things I've ever bought tbh.

ferriswheel · 27/02/2018 21:24

Oh thanks, this is sounding a bit more promising. Can you recommend any fabourites? Im guessing you have to cauliflour and brussel sprout combos slowly...

I have a proper American blender, it's called an Osterizer (may exist in UK too by now?) Bought it 15 yrs ago, I use it for smoothies (no kale or lentils in my smoothies, just fruit!) Or soup, sauces and.... frozen Margaritas Grin

It goes in the dishwasher

It is 100 times better than the nutribullet, it does the same but better.

Go find an Oster!

ferriswheel · 27/02/2018 21:25

Also Hatty, what make of blender did you buy?

ferriswheel · 27/02/2018 21:26

An Oster, am off to look...thanks

I bought my nutri bullet a few years ago and use it all the time for soup, smoothies, dips. I love it. It says not to, but I stick the bits in the dishwasher and they’re fine.

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 27/02/2018 21:28

My kids often ask me for smoothies after dinner especially if it isn't a very nutritious dinner

They love green ones, half spinach, then a banana, frozen mango, pineapple etc some mint leaves and then apple juice. We also often do a variety of colours, red, orange, green and have a bit of each colour.

It's the only way I eat fruit, so it's good for me too and I've definitely had my moneys worth out of my NutriBullet. Was a lot at the time but still so much cheaper than buying ready made smoothies or throwing away all the fruit that would otherwise not get eaten.

Regarding washing it, its fine if you wash it straight away, you can just rinse under the tap or dunk in soapy water. As long as you don't leave it to dry on it washes easily.

ferriswheel · 27/02/2018 21:29

Cant find an oster, only replacement parts!

Does the nutra bullet crush ice?

OP posts:
onemorecakeplease · 27/02/2018 21:30

I have the nutra ninja and use it most days.

It’s really good, easy to wash and kids love mango tango or fruity ones.

Not so keen on veg ones. I like the overnight oats ones but haven’t done that for a while.

Makes lovely hummus too!

GrannyGrissle · 27/02/2018 21:32

I had a Breville one and went juice crazy for a bit but it was a pig to clean. Uming and ahing over one on Groupon £30 instead of £100 ish, good make, grinds ice and nuts as well. my spiralizer needs a friend as it's very lonely at the back of the cupboard of shite i never use

Peanutbuttercups21 · 27/02/2018 21:33

This is mine, it is £££ though and not sure it has,a UK plug, so.maybe that was not very useful, sorry Sad

A really simple but powerful blender has my vote anyway, the Lidl one might be good?

I also make healthy milkshakes (ice cubes, milk and banana... goes frothy and yum)

Anyway, if you get a userfriendly easy washable one, you may end up using it for years !

PrimalLass · 27/02/2018 21:35

I like ours. The kids will have a green smoothie, and would usually run a mile from spinach etc.

Vibe2018 · 27/02/2018 21:35

Smoothies only count as one portion of your five a day no matter how many different types of fruit or vegetables you put in.

I just use a normal blender to make smoothies for my children as a treat now and then. We use frozen berries from tesco, bananas and natural yogurt. We let the berries defrost before blending. My childen enjoy it more than ice cream and its not unhealthy, I think.

llangennith · 27/02/2018 21:36

I’ve got one but the novelty wore off after a few months. The healthiest juices don’t taste particularly nice so kids won’t drink them. Now it’s just used for delicious smoothies.

Canuckduck · 27/02/2018 21:37

We have a blend tech which is very powerful and does a lovely, frothy smoothie. We were smooth crazy at first but haven’t done as many lately. Am sure we’ll pick up again in the spring / summer. It’s super easy to clean. You put water and a drop of soap in and turn it on. Then take off and rinse.

dingdongdigeridoo · 27/02/2018 21:38

I got a cheapo one when I went through a smoothies phase. £15 from Argos and it does the trick. Glad I didn’t splash out as I didn’t use it much, but it’s quite handy for soup and making DS the odd milkshake.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 27/02/2018 21:39

They’re super easy to clean, out a third of water and a drop or two of washing up liquid, sack on the blender and pulse for 20 seconds then rinse.

newtlover · 27/02/2018 21:40

what vibe said
you can't replace food with smoothies, at most they would replace a fruity dessert/snack
you still need to eat proper food, so why not just do that?

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 27/02/2018 21:40

Well that was a shambles was it it!

They’re super easy to clean, rinse quickly then put a third of water and a drop or two of washing up liquid in the cup, put the blades back on, wack on the blender and pulse for 20 seconds then rinse.
