Teacher help! Planning for children in another class.

I have NC'd for this one. I need help/advice from any teachers out there.

I'm a year 1 teacher with a young boy (A) who has a 1-2-1 support (X). Recently I was told that a boy from year 2 (B) would be joining my class so that he could join A and get support from X. I was told that B would simply be doing the same work that I individually planned for A.

Tomorrow there's a workshop and I've only been made aware tonight that B won't be able to join in along with A and X and demanded to know what I plan to do with B as he can't go back to his usual class without support.

AIBU in thinking it wasn't my responsibility to made additional plans for B as I'm not his teacher?

I've made a suggestion of X going with B to his normal class and A will be ok being supported by my other two TA's but apparently that isn't good enough because they've arranged for the TA's to go to other classes during the workshop??

Who has decided that the TAs are going to other classes during the workshop? Your responsibility is to your class, and to ensure A is receiving his 1:1 support.

A member of SLT have offered my TA's to other classes, I was informed that I wouldn't need them so they can be elsewhere.

So you’ve essentially got two children who need 1-to-1 support, who have been having to share, and now tomorrow he won’t have any support and will be being excluded from activities his peers are taking part in, and you’re the one expected to deal with this, presumably whilst also supervising/participating in the workshop?

I don’t know how teachers do it Sad Who’s going to be supervising him?

StressedOut1701 · 27/02/2018 20:42

@EduCated exactly. You summed it up perfectly.

Not a teacher - so probably clueless - but I guess B will just have to attend the workshop if there is no TA for him elsehwere - or be occupied by a member of the SLT!

Push back, in writing. This is not a problem of your making, nor should you have to solve this. Your SLT need a kick up the arse. If you have a SEND liason governor, I’m sure they would love to know about abuse of another pupil’s 1:1 support, which I presume is through an EHCP?

ShawshanksRedemption · 27/02/2018 20:53

Who demanded to know? SLT? Isn't that their job? Or SENCO?

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 27/02/2018 20:56

The responsibility lies with B’s class teacher, not you. What does the SENCO say?

Is this just for one session a week or is this a permanent solution? Have the school cleared it with the LA that B is being taught out of his chronological year group? It’s not very inclusive...

Someone is trying to dump this on your lap.

Email.
To the person who supervises me.

I was told by head of year Debbie that B would be joining class Rainbows and would be supported by Gail who is A’s 1-1 support worker. This morning I got an email from Steve head of SEN saying Gail is not able to support B. Would you please clarify what the arrangements are.

Regards

ShawshanksRedemption · 27/02/2018 21:00

I would clarify as to whether SLT now consider you to be B's class teacher....

StressedOut1701 · 27/02/2018 21:07

All sorted now X is staying with A and a TA is going with B to his usual class. The class teacher is going to plan with X what he can do.

What a nightmare!
