Were you born at home or in a hospital?

And what year was it? I was chatting to some friends a few days ago and I was surprised to find that I was the only one born at home. This was in 1963. Three of my friends are the oldest child, whereas I was the youngest, which explained why they were born in hospital. Back in the early to mid 60s,it was common practice to have your first baby in hospital, then subsequent ones at home, providing there were no health issues or problems with the first birth. Another of my friends said she was born in hospital even though she was the youngest, but then she was born in the late 70s. I remember my DM saying that she didn't want any of her babies at home, she'd rather be safe in hospital, but the doctor wouldn't hear of it! Said she was fit and healthy so it had to be a home birth. I also recall her saying that the midwife who delivered me wouldn't let her sit or lay down while she was in labour, insisted she keep upright and moving around. This seems contrary to what I've heard about a lot of deliveries, where the mother was told to stay flat on her back when she would rather be upright. Any MNers got any stories about when they were born?

Ginnonotginger Blimey your mum sounds like she was tough! Cleaning the kitchen floor just before setting out!
sunshinestorm. I remember when I was pregnant with my DD back in 1983,my MIL (who'd had 4 kids) scaring with me stories about enemas and shaving pubic hair! When the time came for me to have my DD,neither of them happened.

Born in 1967 at home with a midwife (as was my brother 2 years previously). My dad laid out clean clothes under plastic on the bed, ready to put on to assist.

Maternity Hospital. 1985 - Mum had to stay in a week as she was snowed in.

My brother was born 1987 and was at home.

My DS was born 2016 and in hospital, c section.

A maternity hospital in 1967, my Mum had pre eclampsia. My brother was born in the same place in 71.

My DH was born at home in 65 and I think all of his older siblings were too.

Home, on the landing at the top of the stairs. 1962. Second child, my mum had quick labours so when she realised things were starting my Dad went for the midwife who lived in the next street, no car or phone.
They arrived back 10 minutes after I was born. My mum went upstairs but at the top realised I was not going to wait so sat down and gave birth on her own. She said those first few minutes on her own with me were extra special

I really really wanted a home birth for my first in 1999 but my midwife was very against the idea for first births and basically I was bullied out of it. She was born in hospital after a 3 hour labour, no bother at all.

I was therefore determined to have my second at home. I found out the 'second' was second and third at my 12 week scan when the midwife said 'err, you won't be having these at home'. :D

1954, born at home, delivered by the district nurse who cycled over on her bike in a snow storm. My mum used to say the nurse brought me in the basket on the front of her bike (before I knew where babies came from). I was the youngest of 5, all born at home.

1983, twin birth, emergency CS in hospital. But they had admitted DM to induce her even though she was only 35 weeks because they were going on bump measurements and didn’t believe her dates (she was 17 and I suspect knew the very few occasions she’d DTD, but no one would believe her). Luckily they did a scan before giving her anything because they suddenly started panicking and told her it was twins. So they decided to keep her in on bed rest and she went into labour a few days later.

She was born at home in 1966 but I think that was more by accident then design.
