To change my mind last minute re Mirena?

Due to have Mirena fitted in a few hours and I’m so frightened I feel sick. I’ve read far too many horror stories online and I’m now convinced this will be the most painful experience of my life! The reason for getting Mirena is to reduce/eliminate my painful and heavy periods, but after speaking to a few friends they had the implant which completely stopped their periods anyway (plus they didn’t have to go through the horror of having the coil fitted).

My GP was adamant that Mirena was the best way to go as the implant is much less likely to have any effect on my periods, but I’m not so sure now. How many of you have the implant and it has stopped your periods? Seriously considering phoning the GP surgery to see if I can change to the implant instead but worried that it may be too late.

And please, I don’t want any bad stories regarding Mirena. I’ve already read far too many!

Well, I feel like a bit of a wimp now! That wasn’t even half as bad as I thought it was going to be! GP used numbing gel which helped ALOT. It did pinch slightly and then had one quite bad cramp, but it was far more bearable than I imagined.

Got a bit of cramping now, but no worse than usual period cramps. I’m going to treat myself to a nice curry tonight! Thanks to all for your positive stories.

I'm 24 weeks pregnant and SO excited about having a mirena fitted after DC is born! (I am DONE with having babies and periods after this, it's been a tough few years)

snabigailflagstabble · 27/02/2018 19:12

i have an IUD which i assume is similar to insert and it's fine. discomfort.

LucreziaBoredYa · 27/02/2018 19:20

Good for you OP. I was reading and watching as I have a massive phobia of smears and the like. As I had my Mirena under anaesthetic, it's something I'm not looking forward to when getting changed but you've given me hope.

KochabRising · 27/02/2018 19:23

So glad you went through with it!

Presidentpoopants · 27/02/2018 19:45

Lucrezia- I honestly think it depends on how skilled the person is that’s doing the procedure! I’ve had terrible smears in the past that have left me a sobbing wreck because they were so painful, but this was a much more pleasant experience. I really am a complete wimp when it comes to things like this, so I’m sure you’ll be fine! Grin

For future smears:

Ask for a pediatric speculum
Feet up on stirrups hurts SO much less that the ‘draw your legs up and let your knees fall’ stuff.

Presidentpoopants · 27/02/2018 19:49

Kochab - yes definitely! Usually for smears it’s the old “put your feet together and let your knees drop”, but this time she just asked me to lean one leg on her and the other against the wall. It felt like a more natural position so maybe that’s why I had less discomfort than usual.

Congratulations OP. I am on my 4th Mirena and although I know it’s a quick procedure I still dread it, but it is so worth it. Now on my 13th yr period and pain free ( endometriosis). Now I am going through menopause and have the Mirena and estrogen patches. Life is good and I have saved a fortune on tampons and pads over the years.
You will probably have some spotting over the next few months but things settled down. It doesn’t suit everyone but it’s worth a try!

Sahara123 · 27/02/2018 20:08

Just to add , I’ve had three Mirena’s over the years, took a few months but eventually stopped my horrendous 3 week periods. I had the last one out a year ago to find that I have sailed through the menopause without realising it as hadn’t had a period for years !

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 28/02/2018 08:40

Well done for conquering your fears OP.

And I hope this brings an end to the misery of heavy periods.

I used to have a very tender cervix and womb pre mirena but my uterus was always thick and swollen, and I wonder if it's connected in any way.

Ginseng1 · 28/02/2018 08:58

Glad it went well. I just had the implant taken out after a year (constant n irregular bleeding nightmare) got the mirena in 3 weeks ago the GP was super so quick 2 mins of niggly pain. Few cramps that evening n spotting but nothing else since. Let's hope it continues like this cos so far I love it!

LucreziaBoredYa · 28/02/2018 09:44

Thank you OP Smile.
