AIBU to think a washing machine should last more than three years?

Our washing machine has tripped all the electrics so is presumably stuffed. It’s frankly been shit anyway (ate socks regularly requiring messy filter clearance and no drain hose so flooded the utility every time), but I’m pretty certain that something will be catastrophically wrong with the motherfucker since I can’t even plug it in without throwing the master fuse. It’s three years, just, since I bought it. It was £400. The last one made it to 3.5 years and cost £300. Stupidly I thought I would pay a bit more to get a better machine. Should I just buy the £200 one now and treat them as disposable?

My washing machine died on Sunday and I'm fucked as I can't afford to fix it/get a new one. I'd only had it 2 years and 11 months! The one before that lasted 4 years. The one before that was a really cheap Candy one - surprisingly, I had it for 14 years and I only had to get rid of it due to a house fire .

fantasmasgoria1 · 27/02/2018 10:52

I think it depends on usage. When kids were young and I was doing three loads a day they lasted approx four years. Once only me and my ex it lasted for eight years and I’m guessing he still has it I left it for him!

Lweji · 27/02/2018 10:53

Have you had someone look at it? It could be an easy to fix issue.

If you live in a hard water area it may pay up to use descaling products regularly, if you haven't.

Roomba · 27/02/2018 10:54

I only do 2 or 3 loads a week, I should have said, so I expected my machine to last longer than almost 3 years. So pissed off right now.

Lweji · 27/02/2018 10:56

I have a Hotpoint that I use about 3-4 times a week and it is still going strong after 7 years.
Also hard water area.

The only issue it has had was to do with the drier component, as it's basically installed as a fitted machine, but it's supposed to be stand free. But the washing part never caused any problems.

TeddyBee · 27/02/2018 11:04

I’m not planning on getting anyone out - if it wasn’t heating the water/draining or something obvious I would buy the part and fit it, but since it won’t even turn on to do any diagnostics, it could be almost anything. If it doesn’t play ball after drying out, I’ll stick it on eBay for spares and cut my losses. The powder drawer front snapped off the other day. In my hand. So it wasn’t exactly a quality piece of equipment for the £400x

My current machine (Bosch) is 11 years old this year and has never gone wrong, touch wood.

Previous one (Indesit) lasted 12 years.

The one before that was a 2nd hand Zanussi that I bought for £12 and I had it for 8 years, but have no idea how old it was when I got it.

My first dishwasher lasted 19 years before it was replaced last year.

LakieLady · 27/02/2018 11:13

Sorry, should have added that we have hard water but only do 3 loads most weeks. The dishwasher is used 4-5 times a week.

PhelanThePain · 27/02/2018 11:19

On this one you just have to open the filter and let it flood basically

Mine is the same. It is much less messy if you pull the machine out from the wall and tip it back so it is leaning back against the wall then put a basin or bucket under the part where the water comes out. then open it! Grin

Our basic model Miele is heading for 14 years old now. It cost about £850 which was a fortune at the time. It had one service visit about 6 years ago and is still going strong. (Touch wood).

I had to replace the `Miele dishwasher and tumble dryer last year which were of similar vintage.

For somethings I would always go for the low cost option but for those particular white goods I think it's worth paying extra.

ToadOfSadness · 27/02/2018 11:31

My Bosch (not a cheap one) lasted just over 3 years. It is still struggling on as long as I only use one program and manually fill it with hot water and have to shut it in the room when it spins because of the noise. It rips the bedding and bathrobes and is on the list of things to deal with. As soon as I get further down the list it is going to the dump even if it is still struggling on.
Not worth the repair bill.

Previous Bosch machines have been better, although on reflection not as good as they were made out to be. Going for a cheaper one next time.

SwearyBerry · 27/02/2018 11:45

I'm on my 13th year of my mid-range Bosch. Hard water area, husband is in the gym twice a day, so it gets loads of abuse. I've had repairs twice along the way, both £60ish. Will def get another Bosch when this one dies.

CurcubitaPepo · 27/02/2018 11:47

Another vote for Miele. Pils have a washing machine and dishwasher which are both 25 years old. We have a Miele washing machine which is 13 years old. Ours is the basic model which cost about £500 new. None of them have ever had anything go wrong. Wouldn’t have anything else.

Pinkprincess1978 · 27/02/2018 11:48

That sounds like ours so when we got our last one we started to pay the £5 a month insurance then a year later moved and accidentally got free integrated appliances (builder installed an intergrated kitchen in error 😀) so we paid £60 for no reason and will never see it back.

It was my intention to put £5 a month away instead but 14 months down the line and of course I have done nothing of the sort ha ha.

SpringEquinox · 27/02/2018 12:01

6 year old Hoover washer dryer (they usually don't last as long as just washers) just had visit from reliable local repairman. Was the brushes on the motor, which was reasonable wear and tear in my experience. The problem comes when the callout and parts add up to a higher percentage of the cost of replacement and also that one is mending something that could have other problems soon.

Three years is not reasonable for a domestic use machine . All white goods are built from flimsier and cheaper components now - replaced a 12 year old dishwasher last year - fittings look identical but are so much more frail, within the similar equivalent price range.

Celticrose · 27/02/2018 12:37

1st washing machine lasted 13 years. Was a Bendix and cost £400 which was a lot 32 years ago. Next was a AEG which lasted 10 years. Now on another AEG which will be 9 years in Oct. We moved house 18 months ago leaving behind a 19 year old dishwasher (Siemens) still going strong (new house was turnkey but we brought our washing machine with us) Had my cooker cleaned before we moved and they cleaned my washing machine as part of the deal hoping it extendsbits life some what

TeddyBee · 27/02/2018 20:30

Well I managed to get the washing out (took off top, poked until I hit the door latch). There definitely seems to have been some kind of water ingress around the powder drawer, so I guess when the front broke off it buggered the machine somehow. Anyway, even with the door open the rcd trips so I’ve shoved it on eBay and have found a nice looking Beko for £230 to buy from the Co-op. Sigh. At least it’s payday. And I can afford a new one. Counting blessings. Etc.

Recent engineer said buy Bosch (top end) or beko (bottom end). That's all you need.

Avoid Samsung products and indesit, hotpoint and Hoover like the plague

Worldsworstcook · 27/02/2018 20:48

Mum has a 32 yr old Miele dishwasher!

ToastyFingers · 27/02/2018 21:09

The exact same thing happened to me, just before Christmas (washing machine tripping the electrics) it turned out there was a broken wire, and some other part needed replacing. I got it fixed for £90, so a lot cheaper than a new one. It was 6 years old when it broke.

clarrylove · 27/02/2018 21:23

My AEG will be 21yrs old this year and still going strong. Use the 41min quick wash nearly every time.

Other makes we have had in other properties and have been rubbish - Candy, Hoover (w/d), Indesit and Hotpoint.

villainousbroodmare · 27/02/2018 21:29

My parents have the same washing machine they bought when they got married 40 years ago. Also the same fridge. And a twenty plus year old tumble dryer. All going strong. Different quality stuff...

BarbaraofSevillle · 27/02/2018 21:36

Our fridge freezer is 20 years old. I'm torn between letting it go on to see how long it lasts and replacing it because I've heard horror stories about fires being caused by old fridges.

Although ours is so old that it was made in England, and is a Hotpoint as it happens. Hotpoint dishwasher lasted 13 years of almost daily use.

MabantoMoonface · 27/02/2018 21:41

I see Miele has been bigged up. Totally agree. Miele washing machine bought 12 years ago - came with 10 year guarantee, which was never needed. Still going strong. Clean it with soda crystals once a fortnight or so.
