You dress like a mum

Would you find this offensive?

Anna Wintour's a mum. In fact, she's probably a grandmother now.

But I think it was probably intended in an unflattering way. Society seems to have a low opinion of mothers.

Frankly, though, stuff 'em.

I'm guessing the person who said this to you makes Anna Wintour feel a mess? No? Thought not.

Bluntness100 · 26/02/2018 22:17

Nah. If someone said you dress like a dad to a bloke it would also be mildly offensive. It's not gender specific. And we all know what it means to dress like a dad. What with the ironed jeans and all.

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 26/02/2018 22:18

My particular brand of mum chic seems to consist of a wide range of outfits with banana handprints on them...

squarecorners · 26/02/2018 22:18

The question is, what is the adjective that you use to describe clothes that you like?
If, like me, that adjective is "comfy", then I'm sorry but you dress like a mum. So do I though, it's fine, we've got stretchy waistbands.

squarecorners · 26/02/2018 22:19

Bluntness100 DH was very offended when I told him that he drives a Dad Car...

thecatfromjapan · 26/02/2018 22:20

Bluntness is also very right.

Jassmells · 26/02/2018 22:22

Depends on the context? Childress, thin, 20 something saying it as an insult then yeah maybe (!) equally I am a mum so meh.

Have you ever read the brummymummyof2 blog on dressing like a mum and shaving your hairy toes for summer and why autumn is the best season because your knee high boots are relevant, cracks me up. As long as dressing like a mum doesn't directly refer to my hairy toes I guess I'm ok!

OutyMcOutface · 26/02/2018 22:22

No. To me it would just mean "You are wearing skinny jeans with a Breton too". Not exactly a compliment but hardly an idiot.

OutyMcOutface · 26/02/2018 22:22

*indult

OutyMcOutface · 26/02/2018 22:22

*insult ffs

SaucyJack · 26/02/2018 22:26

Nah, I wouldn't be offended.

I am reasonably at peace with looking like the old, fat, boring woman I've become.

Bring on the leggings.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 26/02/2018 22:30

Whatever a woman is wearing, be it a bright yellow unitard and platforms, a burkha or just a smart business suit, you can guarantee that somebody, somewhere will have something to say about it. One person's "mum boots" will be another person's "effortlessly casual".

What's wrong with being dressed like a mum anyhow? If you were dressed like a hooker on the school run, they'd complain about that too. Business suit? Ooh, these working mothers! Designer gear? What a fucking show off!

steff13 · 26/02/2018 22:37

On Project Runway, things are often described as "mumsy." It's not meant as a compliment.

LucreziaBoredYa · 26/02/2018 22:38

My style improved when I became a mother, classier and less clubtastic. I was 21 though :)

Bettyfood · 26/02/2018 22:40

No. I am a mum. If it were intended as an insult it would miss the mark somewhat.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 26/02/2018 22:48

I was a tomboy before having kids and I’m still a tomboy. Trackies and chinos are my choice along with trainers and I don’t intend to change for some idealistic idea of how a Mum should dress. As long as your comfortable who cares. I play video games with and without my kids. I suppose someone will say that’s not how a Mum should act. But I don’t care...

Gabilan · 26/02/2018 22:51

Would an accountant being told they dress like an account be insulting? Would telling a fashion magazine editor that they dress like a fashion magazine editor an insult? I'm a mum, I dress in practical clothes

What if you're an accountant and a mum? How are you supposed to dress then?

fusushumi · 26/02/2018 22:52

I model myself on Victoria Wood who said "I always look like I've just staggered up a railway embankment following a train derailment"

LemonysSnicket · 26/02/2018 23:02

The mums I know have money and dress classy af

LadyLoveYourWhat · 26/02/2018 23:07

No, I wouldn't find it offensive, because if I did it would mean that I thought that all mums dressed the same and that there was something wrong with looking like you are a mum and neither of those things are true.

pinkhorse · 26/02/2018 23:10

It's said as an insult around here. To look 'mumsy' isn't a good thing

PerfectlyDone · 26/02/2018 23:18

At best horrific stereotyping.
At worst misogynistic shit.

So, no, it's not good.

I am a mother.
I dress.
Ergo, I dress like a mum Grin

BestZebbie · 26/02/2018 23:31

It can't be that insulting, given that "mom jeans" are a thing. Even if the word is being used to describe a shape that is unflattering, clearly people still want to buy and wear it!
