Hi All

I'm just about to do my monthly big shop. I usually do one big shop for food cleaning and toiletries and then a small weekly shop for fresh stuff like milk bread etc. I meal plan and try to use up fridge and freezer contents prior to the next big shop.

There are 2 of us here full time, myself and my DP. DSD and DSS are here for 50% of the time. They are 3 and 7.

I seem to flit between online shopping and actually going to the supermarket for the big shop and tend to go to either tesco or lidl for the small shop.

I've a feeling I'm spending more than I should be with such a sporadic approach.

Are you loyal to a particular supermarket, if so which so you get best value from? I'd ideally prefer online but I'd be happy to physically go if the saving was worth it.

My 'Loyalty' is based on price, therefore = Lidl and Aldi. I love Waitrose but now only use it for top ups and sell by date discounts.

LMW1990 · 26/02/2018 20:31

Thanks @user. Do you see a significant price difference shopping at lidl and Aldi?

Aldi for vast majority of stuff, then Tesco for their free from range

CheshireChat · 26/02/2018 20:32

Nope, depends in what I need to pick up and go from there.

Meat and softener- Aldi.
Detergent- Asda
Etc

I also go to various shops if I fancy stuff in particular like Lidl's Greek stuff.

VioletCharlotte · 26/02/2018 20:33

I tend to shop at Asda, not because I'm loyal to it, just mainly because it's cheaper and only 2 minutes from my house, so more convenient. I prefer Sainsburys, but it's just so expensive! I did shop at Lidl for a while, but got frustrated with it. Tesco's is ok, but the other side of town.

Whatshallidonowpeople · 26/02/2018 20:36

Do you all factor in the extra cost of time and travel to go round all these supermarkets

onlyonaTuesday · 26/02/2018 20:36

I always spend less if I shop on line.
If I'm at a supermarket I get sucked into buying all kinds of stuff I don't need

Ginkypig · 26/02/2018 20:38

I'm loyal for my main shop but only because I'm disabled so have a delivery pass to be able to afford getting a delivery every week
I do though wait for certain things to go on offer then buy a few at a time. Coffee,Mayo other things that keep.

I also get things from other places if they are a good price and I can get there or p&p is cheap

So washing powder, toiletries, toilet roll etc can all be got usually cheaper from shops like wilko or savers etc. Sometimes even eBay or amazon for some of that stuff.

CheshireChat · 26/02/2018 20:43

I live in an area with loads of supermarkets and I have a direct bus to a couple more as we don't have a car. However, outside of main, expensive items I'll pick them up from wherever I am as i refuse to waste loads of time.

fantasmasgoria1 · 26/02/2018 20:49

Aldi, Iceland, b&m for packet mixes etc some independent shops for meat deals etc occasionally Asda or Sainsbury’s. Never Morrisons because my own opinion others will differ, I find the stuff we buy to be expensive there and quality poor but as I said that’s just me!!!!!!

user1486076969 · 26/02/2018 20:49

LMW - yes, definitely cheaper at Lidl or Aldi...and fantastic quality.

NewYearNewMe18 · 26/02/2018 20:50

No, I shop all over the place.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 26/02/2018 20:56

I am Tesco loyal...
They deliver and I like collecting the points for days out through the year which saves an absolute fortune! Never had a bad experience. Spend between £80-£100 a week for six of us, plus one small dog and that includes everything (food, nappies, toiletries, cleaning products).

MuncheysMummy · 26/02/2018 20:57

Aldi we have gone from £50 a week down to £35 since I discovered Aldi instead of Asda!

Sparklesocks · 26/02/2018 20:58

I shop around and compare prices, I’m not loyal if I can get a better deal elsewhere

VioletCharlotte · 26/02/2018 20:59

Laiste · 26/02/2018 21:13

Never grocery shop online and completely disloyal.

I chose the shop based on where i'm going next (near where i'm going next or in a hurry or not) or if they sell something i fancy particularly that day.

Gatehouse77 · 26/02/2018 21:17

I start at Aldi and finish at Sainsbury's.
Mid-week top up at Sainsbury's.
Very occasionally pop into Tesco, Waitrose or M&S.
If we've forgotten something or run out of an ingredient then we go to Co-op as it's at the bottom of the road.

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 26/02/2018 21:27

I am pretty loyal to sainsburies but only becausw ive had bad expereinces at other places near me (Tesco and lidl). I do sometimes shop elsewhere but tend to go back. Lidl I find never has anything I want and the vegetables go off really fast so I end up doing a second shop each time and spending twice as much. Sainsburi3s basics range i find is just as cheap and some times cheaper than Lidl anyway. And because theres more choice here's always a cheap option while lidl somehings are expensive
Shopping online saves me money normally because I can always go back and change if it comes to too much at the end, I think doing ond big shop always saves over small sporadic ones, with each shop I always pick up one or two extras and this adds up

Ohyesiam · 27/02/2018 07:40

Lidl for most meat, veg, fruit, juice, passata, pasta.
Sainsbury for bread, tinned pulses, organic stuff, sausages and bacon.

Branleuse · 27/02/2018 07:47

I think when we say we are loyal to a company Branleuse, we mean that is the company we stick to for a number of reasons. It isn’t like being loyal to a friend, ie I will stick to you through thick and thin.

I am “loyal” to Sainsbury’s because that’s where I do my online shop and I can’t be bothered to join up to another one. Also I have got to know the products there, what I like and what I don’t. And they do a great cherry cake. So far they haven’t pissed me off enough to bother changing over, although they have skated close to the wind a few times.
