Unregistered schools

Just seen a BBC report on unregistered schools.

There was the usual blah about the DfE not doing enough to close them down etc.

But I felt like they're completely missing the point.

Surely the main issue is who the fuck is sending their children to them? And WHY?

There was evidence of disgusting food conditions, minging disrepair, damp, cramped rooms manhandling of children; operating out of office blocks and rooms above shops.
Who TF, when they're looking for a school for their child, tours the local schools... and then chooses the one in a bloody room above a shop!?

Surely the fact that a school is unregistered brings up all the usual concerns of no safeguarding procedures, unregulated teachers, no qualification requirements, no health and safety regulation. Etc etc.
Why would ANYBODY choose that as a place to school their child!? Every day!

Regardless of the DfE working against these schools, why TAF is there any demand for them?

I have a friend who has kids in these schools.

Broadly, she was brought up in a religious cult community. Married a man she met once for half an hour (she was brought up to believe that this is normal). Wasn't told of existence of contraception. Had multiple children in short succession. Argued with her husband that she wanted better schooling, but ultimately failed as all children from her cult sect send to these schools and there was be communal shunning / ostracisation if she sent to a state school (even a faith state school). She is considering running away but the religious leaders will mount a massive court battle to keep the children in the cult religious community. Also she says mums are never allowed to set foot into the boys schools so aren't aware of the conditions. But even if they were, not much she can do.

Please try not to be too judgmental...

Why the assumption that these schools are all run by people who are not of UK origin? I came across one fairly recently that was definitely run by white Anglo-Saxon types: there was a lot of emphasis on religion (C of E), and was really quite weird,. They expected parents to "pay" for their child's place by working in the school, so essentially the vast majority of the teaching came from people with little or nothing by way of teaching qualifications. They were up in arms that someone had dared to criticise the quality of education there.
