AIBU to consider taking my 9 year old to watch Paloma Faith?

DH and I have been given tickets to watch Paloma Faith in July at Towcester racecourse - ds(12) will be away on a residential school trip but dd(9) will be around - I suggested to my mum that I might buy another ticket so the three of us could go and she was mortified - AIBU to think that a Paloma Faith outdoor concert is not going to scar dd for life? or am I being very naive?

I take 10yo DD to see bands all the time. Plus, festivals in the summer. Take her.

PaperdollCartoon · 26/02/2018 16:03

There’s no reason whatsoever not to take her! I’ve seen Paloma live, she’s fantastic, adorable and so positive. Why was your Mum mortified?!

GinisLife · 26/02/2018 16:04

Absolutely I would. Especially if it's a summer outdoor concert. Loads of people take their children.

nancy75 · 26/02/2018 16:05

I take Dd to concerts & festivals and have done for a few years, she’s 12 and it doesn’t seem to have done her any harm!

MissionItsPossible · 26/02/2018 16:09

Mortified!? It's Paloma Bloody Faith! Hardly known for her wild antics or potty mouth! If it was a mosh pit headlined by Marilyn Manson I could see her point.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 26/02/2018 16:09

Is it Paloma Faith or the outdoor concert that's freaking your mum out?

Take her!

jelliebelly · 26/02/2018 16:10

Thank you all - hate it when my mum makes me doubt my own sanity! It’ll be too crowded, she’ll get lost, it will be too rowdy, people will be drunk, she will be bored/tired/hungry are some of the comments so far!

Seems fine to me. I'd understand your mother's reaction if you were planning on taking her to see some expletive packed rap artist gig in a seedy night club but Paloma Faith seems entirely suitable.

Does your mother know who Paloma Faith is?

jelliebelly · 26/02/2018 16:11

lol Dalek good point - I thought she did but maybe not given her subsequent comments! I only bloody mentioned it in passing too.

Just thought - is she concerned that there might be a terrorist attack but is hiding her concerns with other reasons? I can understand there being a general concern over kids at concerts after Ariana Grande.

But if that is the reason then I think that is all the more reason to go, otherwise they win.

Moo678 · 26/02/2018 16:13

I think it’s a lovely idea. I’m actively looking for a suitable gig to take my 6 and 8 yr olds too. Have an amazing time.

ShowOfHands · 26/02/2018 16:13

Or by mortified, did you mean she is embarrassed by your music choices?

I can't see why she's embarrassed either.

jelliebelly · 26/02/2018 16:58

Not embarrassed just shocked that I suggested it I think - in her eyes dd is still about 3 years old I think

It'll be fine, Paloma is a totally suitable act for a 9yr old!

raspberrysuicide · 26/02/2018 17:05

I've taken my dd to concerts from about the age of 8. She loved it.

sunnyday1976 · 26/02/2018 17:08

Is it tagged on to the end of a race day or a stand alone event? I’ve been to a few ones that run straight after racing at York, and although under 16s can get in free, I wouldn’t take my DC of a similar age. Lots of really, really drunk people that don’t always make for the best atmosphere for children. Paloma Faith would be fine though!!

gussyfinknottle · 26/02/2018 17:13

Can I come and bring my 10 year old?
PF is a wonderful creative woman and an inspiration for everyone.

BackforGood · 26/02/2018 17:15

Going against the grain here and agreeing with your Mum.
It's not that it would be "inappropriate", but just I wouldn't have thought it would be particularly child friendly, and not something that would generally interest a 9 yr old.
If I were spending ££ on a ticket for something for a 9 yr old, it's not what I'd choose for her.

I too would get a sitter and go and have a night out with dh, then have that money available for something else that is aimed at 9 yr olds.

jelliebelly · 26/02/2018 18:01

It’s not after a racing event - just a standalone summer event (I think towcester racing is in winter) so drink shouldn’t be an issue. To be fair dd probably isn’t a typical 9 year old girl - she’s quite creative and likes to be different so actually the more I think about it the more I think I would like to take her. Rather that than Little Mix or similar.

Thanks for all your responses - off to buy a ticket now.

@jelliebelly if she’s the creative sort, even better. Her live show and costumes are amazing, Paloma is indeed an inspirational artist, so natural, a real feminist. She might swear a little bit though! I want to see her again now
