To ask, if you have a Yr4 DC, whether this homework is ‘normal’?

DC just turned 9 came home from school with English comprehension homework on Diogenes and the cynics. Is this standard? The level of language and contents both seem pretty high to me for 8/9 YO.

Sorry the photos are bad.
Thanks!

my dd is in yr 4, they don't have homework other than 8 spellings a week.

The school issue a sheet once a term with little projects and tasks on it that they can choose from to earn extra points, but its not compulsory.

kyz1981 · 26/02/2018 13:34

My DD yr 4 comes home with something like this every week, at the moment is Viking’s and has been doing Thor, she tends to only have 4 questions but they are two part questions. It’s pretty typical of her English work on a week to week basis.

Afreshcuppateaplease · 26/02/2018 13:34

This week for english homework my year 4 dc had to write six sentences containing prepositions about the living room

spagbol11 · 26/02/2018 13:37

My ds is in year 4 and very nearly 9, he gets 15 spellings, a sheet of maths and reading to do each week, from Wednesday to Wednesday

If you ignore the names, the language used is quite simple. It introduces some more complex words such as 'frugality' which are in common use but the sentence structure is fairly straightforward.

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 26/02/2018 13:38

It depends what the accompanying questions are too.

implantsandaDyson · 26/02/2018 13:38

To be honest it would be for mine. One of mine is a year older (not long turned 10). She's in P6 (NI) and they would have had very similar work from last year.

Comeymemo · 26/02/2018 13:38

Wow Kritical, I’m very envious!

Seems like there’s a wide variety within the bounds of ‘normal’.

It’s ridiculous but standard these days. My child was learning things in year 4 that I hadn’t got to during my English A level. Expected standards get higher year on year.

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 26/02/2018 13:41

Sorry just noticed the questions!

Comeymemo · 26/02/2018 13:47

To be clear, I’m not complaining about it - DC is great at English and we’ve been asking the school to challenge her a bit more. I guess my OP is about hope, rather than scorn 🙂

This is normal for my dcs' school.

Comeymemo · 26/02/2018 14:04

Thanks, it looks like the school is finally catching up.

Yep, this looks exactly like the literacy my year 4 nson gets - 10 questions based on a piece of text - the subject matter has been everything from Chinese New Year to Winter Olympics to Greek Gods etc.
The activity is all about being able to extract information from a piece of writing, so it doesn't really matter what the writing is about.

Having said that, his maths homework is TRICKY (I'm a words person!) and he's definitely doing stuff I didn't do until secondary school.
