Aibu to feel sorry for these school girls?

It's freezing out, snowing in fact, and so many girls out and about with just socks and skirts (and the rest of their clothes) but my God, aren't they cold?
Every morning I walk past the local primary school on the way to the station and see these young girls and they look so cold. I just wonder why they don't have those thick tights or trousers on?
I honestly do feel sorry for them and want to give them a hot chocolate and a blanket!!
Is it just me?

I guess because my son is only 4 that I bundle him up in a winter coat, hat, scarf and gloves that I find it strange that these girls have none of that
And it's been so very long since I was a teenage girl myself and refuse to leave the house without my fleece, winter coat and scarf in place these days that I'm simply out of touch!! Mmm???
Grin
NeverTwerkNaked - maybe that saying kept us all warm as teenage girls?? Grin

My DD is fuming she's not allowed to wear trousers to school.

She's also, today only - while it's snowing at least - wearing a coat to school. Her face = Hmm when I suggested gloves and a scarf too, or putting the hood up and = Envy when I mentioned doing the zip up. But in her mind, if she was wearing trousers, she wouldn't need a coat.

ArcheryAnnie · 26/02/2018 09:27

My teenage DS is probably the only one of his friends who actually wears his school coat. At weekends when we go out, he puts on lovely clothes, then puts his anorak on top, zips it to the chin, and won't remove it wherever we are, whether that be a cafe, the theatre, a museum, or whatever. I am reminded of South Park Kenny, or that kid in East is East who never puts down his parka hood.

diddl · 26/02/2018 09:28

"teens would rather be cold trust me"

Not here they wouldn't.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 26/02/2018 09:28

I was exactly the same. Their hormones zapping around keep them warm.

I’m much the same now because of hormone issues.

Leave them to it, no one ever died of hypothermia on the way to school.

claraschu · 26/02/2018 09:28

This seems to be an English, or maybe a British thing. European and American children wear warm coats quite happily. I have a theory about it, but will keep it to myself.

Shedmicehugh · 26/02/2018 09:29

I was a slightly more compliant teen! I would put my coat on to leave the house, then take it off and stuff into my school bag once out the door!!

Zaphodsotherhead · 26/02/2018 09:29

They'd rather be cold than uncool.

Raybon · 26/02/2018 09:29

I think it's great that they are so Hardy! They are hardly outside for 20 mins, it's not going to kill them. Schools are so overheated they'd have to take it off and carry it around all day. Dd gets the bus home then has a 10 minute walk. She wears a sports hoodie and that's that.

TheBitterBoy · 26/02/2018 09:29

DS is wearing shorts today (aged 9) despite my reasoned arguments for trousers. He just finds them more comfortable, and I think I agree, his school is hugely hot and they spend a decent amount of time sat on the floor cross legged which is very uncomfortable in formal trousers.

However I did win the coat battle today as I pointed at the snow that had just started falling as we were leaving!

PhelanThePain · 26/02/2018 09:30

I remember wearing two pairs of thick tights and socks underneath at school. We all did this in winter and if we could have carried the school radiators round with us we would have. I’m surprised they never collapsed underneath the weight of us all sitting on them.

Buglife · 26/02/2018 09:30

I grew up in the North East and was a typical Geordie, never dressed for the weather! I don’t remember feeling cold as a child or at least I remember it seeming like an unavoidable inconvenience rather than something I could help by wearing a warmer coat, scarf, hat etc! Ballet pumps in January 😂 I wrap up now I’m in my 30’s! My 3 year old DS rejects warm clothing too “but I LOVE being cold!” is his argument.

ReanimatedSGB · 26/02/2018 09:31

DS wears his warm coat, hat and gloves when its cold, and will kick off if we can't find gloves or hat in the morning. He's 13.

(Actually, as this is the first proper snow we have had round here for about two years, this is the first time I sent him off to school alone. In the snow. In the cold snow. I felt a bit of a pang about that.)

This is DS1 too. Although at nearly 18 persuading him to leave his bedroom and be seen in public with me is rare. I took him to the opticians on Saturday and he had his eyes tested with his parka fully done up.

I’m almost surprised that he takes it off at home. But it goes in his floordrobe when he gets in. Hmm

I have a DD age 12 who has never wanted to wear a coat or tights or indeed anything that might keep her warm. She has gone out this morning with leggings and a t-shirt on. She will be at the gym now, sweating away, but then has a long walk home, in the cold, very cold. It is making me shiver just thinking about it. She will come home, shower and put on a summer dress, in all likelihood, but then put her snugly warm unicorn dressing gown over the top of it.

diddl · 26/02/2018 09:34

" I have a theory about it, but will keep it to myself."

Oh, please share!

greeneyedlulu · 26/02/2018 09:35

Bug life - yes I get the 'but I love it' argument from my DS so reading that made me chuckle!

Lot of threads about girls underwear at the moment. Well...two that I've seen.

phoenix1973 · 26/02/2018 09:37

Yanbu for that. But all i get from my DD is "I'M NOT COLD"
She has trousers, tights, hat, gloves, scarf.
She chooses to wear non of the above, instead preferring skirt, socks, no hat, no gloves. 😮🙄

KERALA1 · 26/02/2018 09:37

At DDs girls school the fearsome deputy hates coats as they look messy and get in the way at school. So none wear them! Just flimsy blazers which apparently suffice Hmm. Us parents are onto a loser if the kids don't want to wear and backed up by the school..

grasspigeons · 26/02/2018 09:38

its warm in the classrooms and they don't spend much time outside in break/lunchtime to be honest.

however, I do feel a mum anxiety about them being sat in wet clothes all day.

UrgentScurryfunge · 26/02/2018 09:41

I didn't mention the T word to DS this morning, just pointed out that as it's snowing he'd need the long socks with his shorts. I did insist that he needed a jumper on to school as a t-shirt and coat wasn't enough. Beyond that is his problem.

He's worn trousers to school for about 3 hours this year for a visit to a place of worship and was back in shorts ASAP. The staff all conmented that he looked very different!

I refused to wear a coat for a couple of years at secondary. I'd been bought a pastel coloured M&S coat just before I stopped growing at a tender age. As it neither wore out because it was too embarrasing to wear nor got grown out of, my mum refused to replace it for years.

UnimaginativeUsername · 26/02/2018 09:42

At DDs girls school the fearsome deputy hates coats as they look messy and get in the way at school.

It is ridiculous that schools are built without proper facilities for storing coats.

BeyondThePage · 26/02/2018 09:43

Different world over here in the West then... DD15 and DD17 both wear parkas to school, and 300 denier tights and jumpers. They get the bus and walk 20 min so take warmth over "cool" any day.

JuliaSevern · 26/02/2018 09:46

Dd13 did wear a coat and gloves today but doesn't usually. She wears thick tights and they have to wear a fairly thick jumper under their blazer. She has a locker
