Currently sat playing online bingo with the princely sum of a tenner, hoping I may get lucky.

Anything over 5k and I am not going into my hated job tomorrow Grin

Has anyone ever got lucky and won big?

I won a grand about 7 years about - nothing since Sad

My claim to (near) millions was when we where in LVegas for my sons wedding and one evening I stayed down in the casino just playing for 20/25 cent lines on the machines, after a while I cashed in what I had won about 80 dollars and moved onto another line of machines, then the bells and whistles went off the man who had taken my seat at the other machine had won the nightly jackpot of one million dollars for a 25cent bet just 15mins after I had moved.

PanannyPanoo oh dear. Shock

There was a story in the news years ago about a man who did exactly the same thing but couldn’t live with the disappointment and killed himself. Not worth dying for.

I always wonder about lotto winners, the ones who choose not to go public and so don't get any help and advice from Camelot about investments, savings, tax etc.

How would you even go about managing millions?? I presume an accountant, financial advisor? Seems frightening to just pick someone out of the yellow pages and hand your faith (and control of the money!) over to them!

juls1888 · 25/02/2018 17:48

I won £10k on Tombola bingo a few years ago a couple of days before Christmas. It was so welcome! We bought a beautiful new fancy sofa and spent the retail on boring stuff like car repairs and a dishwasher etc.

juls1888 · 25/02/2018 17:48

*rest...god knows where retail came from!

Hortonlovesahoo · 25/02/2018 17:49

Not exactly a massive amount but we were at a casino and a friend said: I’ve got $100, let’s play with that and stop when’s it’s done. He won $1500 on the machines and spent it on a present for his wife.

Gottagetmoving · 25/02/2018 17:51

Last week I picked 3 horses at the racing and did three singles, three doubles and a treble, total cost £7 and won £1,100.
That's the most I've ever won. I was as excited as if it was a lottery jackpot.

IKnewTheStorm · 25/02/2018 17:52

RustyParker - my understanding is that you still get the help from Camelot even if you don’t go public with your win.

I know lots of winners so still hoping it will happen for me one day!

Friend’s sister won £3m
Colleague’s husband (in a syndicate) £150k
My mother’s friend £2m
Another friend of my mother’s - a brand new house
A colleague - about £200k
My personal trainer’s father, won twice, about £2.5m total

My biggest win has been £400 but my DM has won £3k.

We got 5 numbers very early on in the Lottery, we won £1,800 and were over the moon. Until my Mum kept saying.."I bet you're gutted you didnt get the sixth number"...Negative Nelly strikes again

Corblimeyguv · 25/02/2018 18:00

My parents knew a couple who won the equivalent of millions in the late 70s on the Pools. They went through the lot, got into debt from credit advanced by banks when they were flush, ended up divorced within 2 years. Oh, and apparently had endless money requests from family members who decided they were owed a holiday or two on the way, which was part of the overspend issue.

I think the way winners are supported has improved, but the outcome was very sad in this case.

TossDaily · 25/02/2018 18:06

A close family member won a rollover just after the lottery started. We're talking upwards of 20 million.

He gave his family a lovely life and travelled the world. It worked out beautifully for him.

Frombothsidesnow · 25/02/2018 18:07

Lottery winners are offered a lot of psychological support because many of them find it ultimately a difficult adjustment. Relationships change and you can feel very isolated; for example, if you are suddenly the only person you know with lots of money, you lose your familiar social position as one of the gang, you experience guilt, and insecurity about your friendships and love life. It's really difficult and can cause depression and isolation.

MouseholeCat · 25/02/2018 18:15

One of my uncle's friends won a couple million and was very generous with it- still takes all his friends from the pub on holiday!

I won $20 on a scratch card recently- DH and I were really hungry after we collected the winnings, so we went for a Burger King. It was a real carpe diem moment.

RustyParker · 25/02/2018 18:16

That's interesting Storm thanks. I'm sure I read a true life type story that Camelot don't help winners who choose not to go public but I'm glad to hear they do. Hopefully not long til your win Grin

Frombothsidesnow · 25/02/2018 18:19

Camelot definitely support all winners, although I suppose a winner could refuse their support. They don't want negative stories about winners if they can help it so it's in their interests as well as the winners' to facilitate the process.

feeona123 · 25/02/2018 18:27

Not won anything apart from the odd £10 on the lottery but I am a comper. Won £1000 once which was nice!

greathat · 25/02/2018 18:29

My grandad won several hundred grand on lottery. He then developed dementia and was so vile to everyone he lost all his friends... thought everyone was after his money, except my uncle who got power of attorney. Moved to another country and hasn't been back. Other to move him to a cheaper care home 40 minutes drive away...

LakieLady · 25/02/2018 18:30

My friend's partner won over a grand at Goodwood races one year. We were all very pissed, and as we walked back to the coach park, loads of paper was falling out of his pocket. I stopped to pick some of it up and found it was money, she made him stop and went through all his pockets, and he had over £1,200 on him. She thinks he had around £100 when they left the house that morning.

He didn't remember anything about it the next day.

I've won £150 on premium bonds over the last 3 months. My winnings seem to be going up by £25 a month, so if live till I'm 203, I might get close to £100k.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 26/02/2018 00:46

greathat the rules around power of attorney are really strict. Your uncle can’t be spending your granddads money, he’s not allowed. I don’t know how you’d deal with it if he’s abroad but you could look into it.

Jaygee61 · 26/02/2018 00:52

I was in a lottery syndicate at work for 10 years, there were 12 of u# we never won more than £100. Disbanded now!
