To think no media attention should be given to the shooter?

Just a thought, my opinion and was interested what others opinions are.

These school shootings in America, I feel you see the name and face of the shooter every way. Weeks, months and sometimes even years later. There have been multiple instances where these shooters have said "I'm going to be a famous school shooter" and I can't help but think the way the media handles it gives them that 'glory' and 'fame' some of them desire?

I understand if they have to be named once, I get it but I feel like in general they should just be referred to as the shooter? Give them no glory, no fame.. don't plaster their names and faces all over the news repeatedly. I sometimes worry everytime one of these shootings happen and the media blasts the shooters face out there it might inspire someone, even just one messed up person, to go and do the same thing?

@frasier Exactly my thoughts! Thank you for that interesting article. I've got to say I completely agree and really hate the way it's all handled by the media.

Give bloody air time to the National Rifle Association and the corrupt government /senate who don't ban guns in America because of politics re large wealthy organisations ...... they should be hung out to dry, it's their doing, it's their fault .......

saoirse31 · 24/02/2018 11:08

Don't agree tbh. I'd prefer full information rather than random pieces of information being deemed, by who?, as not suitable for the masses.

saoirse31 · 24/02/2018 11:10

And the town hall debates for eg this week, despite best efforts by NRA and Republicans etc kept focus on NRA , gun laws to a large extent. People arent stupid, who knew?

nancy75 · 24/02/2018 11:14

In the latest School shooting I think the back story of the shooter is quite important.
America is never going to ban all guns, if guns can’t be taken out of the equation then other ways of making people safe need to be looked at.
This young man clearly had serious issues, which due to lack of intervention & mental health resources were not dealt with. People knew he had problems but nothing much was done and he still got a gun.
Sadly the gun control argument is going nowhere, maybe now is the time to focus on improving health & social care as a way of reducing these attacks.

LifeBeginsAtGin · 24/02/2018 11:15

Looks like lots of companies are cutting ties with NRA due to social media pressure.

I don't think they should name him or show his image - just refer to him as 'the shooter'.

flumpybear · 24/02/2018 11:19

@nancy - that's a different and relevant debate on US healthcare - non existent unless you can afford it

nancy75 · 24/02/2018 11:23

Flumpy I think it’s time America made it part of the same debate.
Let’s be honest, America has millions of guns, even if they stop selling them today the problem won’t go away, those guns will still be there.
Focusing on improving mental health provisions would be easier that getting rid of guns & would hopefully have much the same outcome.

nancy75 · 24/02/2018 11:24

Every time there’s a mass shooting there are loud calls for gun control but nothing happens, I think it’s time to start looking at other options

cjferg · 24/02/2018 16:54

I'm of the opinion that most of these people are probably very lonely and all they want is a bit of attention. If they can't get positive attention then they'll think 'hey I'll just shoot up a school or stick a bomb on a train, that'll work'

And it works. So YANBU.
