I started talking with a friend who emigrated to the states a few years ago for work. He lives in New York. We were discussing me going over for a holiday as I've never 'done' NYC. Started discussing the time difference between there and here 5 hours which surprised me as when I went to California the difference was larger 8 hours I think.

This lead to me being informed that the two states are on totally opposite ends of the country.

This is my thing I learned late, ive gone 26 years assuming florida and California were next to each other, And i have learned today that Florida is on the same side as NYC. AND IS AS FAR SOUTH AS TEXAS??? I also learnt that Washington is the most northern state on the side of California, where as Washington DC is just below Maryland and right next to Virginia, which is not at all in the middle part of America where I assumed it to be Blush. I didn't learn USA geography at school, but surely I should have picked this up before now, especially considering I have been to both California and Florida!

Anyone else never realised this? Or is it just Me!

That peanuts are not nuts. They are legumes.

MinervaMermaid · 24/02/2018 21:44

Similar to the AKA post... that AWOL was a military term "absent without leave". I used the term for years without knowing this.

CadyHeron · 24/02/2018 21:53

What do you mean pineapples don't grow in trees? Where do they grow?!

In the ground. My mind blew too when I realised...

abbsisspartacus · 24/02/2018 21:59

That Oxo cubes are meant to be ground up whilst still in their packet to save your fingers getting oxo-ey.

TheInvisiblePieceofShit · 24/02/2018 22:08

Being honest and decent doesn't get you very far. Intact people assume you are a complete pushover and treat you accordingly.
Those thst go through life being total cunts seem to do very well in the end and come up smelling of roses.

kirinm · 24/02/2018 22:26

That after brushing your teeth, you're not meant to rinse your mouth out unless you're using mouthwash afterwards.

I wish I'd learned this years ago:

AIBU to ask you to tell me things that you learned way too late in life *lighthearted*.
Legwarmersareohsoeighties · 24/02/2018 22:30

OMG to the pineapple thing! 🍍!! - why did I never know this!!

Things I learnt too late - that you will never feel and be as free as you are after 18 and before children!

That it's ok to be me!

VladmirsPoutine · 24/02/2018 22:32

It will never be 'perfect' so just get going and doing what you can.

KatharinaRosalie · 24/02/2018 22:39

what Timefortea99 said on second page. It's all about networking. You can be the best specialist in the world but you're not going anywhere if nobody likes you. I only wish I had figured this out earlier.

Cellardoor23 · 24/02/2018 22:58

I never knew until last year that the cap on top of a tube has a small pointed bit in the middle to pierce th film. I'd been using a knife or scissors this whole time.

I'm sure there's more.

StripySocksAndDocs · 24/02/2018 23:11

I recall someone saying that on a previous thread Cellardoor23. But they also confessed they were a nurse - all those ointment they must have found awkward to open!!

Cellardoor23 · 24/02/2018 23:34

I think that's where I must have learnt it from. Making my life that much harder for myself for so many years! It's been a revelation Grin

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 25/02/2018 00:01

I learned on here that car fuel gauges have a little arrow pointing to the fuel cap side. At my age, it's good to have a reminder.

Meandmy4 · 25/02/2018 00:08

Learnt from MN actually, that you do not need to peel the heads and remove mushroom stalks 😫 All those wasted minutes Grin

Coastalcommand · 25/02/2018 00:32

That I’ll never look as slim and young as I did as a teenager. Also that it doesn’t matter.

I wasted time thinking I had lots of flaws and hid in baggy clothes (blame the 90s) and awful make up (heather shimmer lipstick and too thick concealer because I thought I needed to). Looking back I was quite pretty!

Queenoftheblitz · 25/02/2018 04:34

Marrow fat peas are cooked in bone marrow. I always thought they were so named cos they are big.

SenecaFalls · 25/02/2018 06:04

Also I bet you there are a fair few Americans who couldn't plot Florida and California correctly on a map.

Very few I would think. We start learning the states in the second grade. We might get confused by some of those in the middle that are sort of rectangular and square shaped, but we can always be counted on to know California and Florida.

GinIsIn · 25/02/2018 06:17

Ummm.... @Punta‘s DH is mistaken. There IS a difference in cut and tailoring, which is the main reason they ask which side a man dresses. Knowing they won’t get an unexpected handful of penis is just an added bonus.

TOADfan · 25/02/2018 06:29

Like a previous PP i was shocked when my dentist told me not to rinse after brushing. Im still getting my head around it, cos my mouth is then filled with dirty, toothpaste and all minty Envy

BouleBaker · 25/02/2018 06:32

Queenoftheblitz that’s not true about marrowfat peas.

From Wikipedia (but also confirmed elsewhere)

Marrowfat peas are green mature peas that have been allowed to dry out naturally in the field, rather than be harvested whilst still young like the normal garden pea. They are used to make mushy peas[1] and also the snack food wasabi peas.[citation needed]

Marrowfat is a traditional, starchy, large-seeded variety of pea[2] (Pisum sativum var. medullare.)[3] The word was coined around 1730 from marrow + fat.[4]

NordicNobody I believe the Great Wall of China is just about visible from low earth orbit, but not from further out (for instance, the moon).

But lots of other human structures are visible from low earth orbit. Many more so than the Great Wall.

I wonder where the myth came from?
