Just popped into a local shop (big chain, also offers funeral services!) to grab a loaf of bread. Wandering round, I see a member of staff tidying the open baked goods (no gloves). He full on coughed onto the shelf of unwrapped cakes/muffins, no attempt to cover his mouth or turn away. I nearly puked! My dh calls this the ‘sneeze muffin’ section, I never take anything from there.

I don’t think I’ve ever complained about hygiene in a shop before, but that was fucking rank! Wibu to send an email saying staff ought to have basic bloody training?

Gross, I'd report it and speak to the manager. I was at the fish counter in my local supermarket and the member of staff was texting on her mobile phone which she put in her pocket and picked up my piece of fish, no thanks.

ThisLittleKitty · 23/02/2018 22:06

That's why I don't like those open section bakery bits. I was in Lidl once when a young girl dropped a doughnut onto the floor and some man next to her told her to just pick it up and put it back because no one will know. Made me feel sick tbh. But anyway yanbu.

Somerford · 23/02/2018 22:09

I never buy anything from that section. I fully expect that from customers so I won't go near it but yeah, a member of staff should have better standards than that. I probably wouldn't have bothered with the complaint if I'd seen it but I can't sit here and tell you that you were out of line for taking the time do It, it's gross.

martellandginger · 23/02/2018 22:12

I saw a child stand on the bottom bread shelf in a supermarket. Mucky shoes touched 2 loaves of bread that I saw!

Allthewaves · 23/02/2018 22:13

Grim. I have same issue about coffee shops that leave their food uncovered on the counter.

DandelionAndBedrock · 23/02/2018 22:15

I once reported poor hygiene in the window of a luxury chocolate shop. I had a v apologetic email from the manager...inviting me in for a free tasting. Of the chocolate I had seen coughed on and handled without gloves. I did not go.

I always report things like this, it's totally unnecessary to have staff not wearing gloves in this situation.

Sar500 · 23/02/2018 22:15

Oh no - I used to buy myself a jumbo almond croissant from a different supermarket as an occasional treat during the week but this has put me right off!

MiffedMummy · 23/02/2018 22:34

I was once in a chain coffee shop, they had a number of flies in the cake counter (which had closing doors on it). I pointed it out to the batista and she looked at me like, 'Quoi? Quel est le problème?' I was then thanked and then she served another person (who didn't hear the conversation) a cake from there. I was thanked by finding the milk freshness seal in my coffee. Tweeted and no response. Haven't drunk there since! YANBU, it's this kind of shit that makes unsuspecting people sick, hygiene is everyone's responsibility!

MammaTJ · 23/02/2018 22:40

I once went into the same chain and went to the deli counter. The member of staff, sneezed, blew her nose, did not put on gloves or wash her hands, then tried to serve me! No thank you very much!

I actually decline, then went to complain to the manager at the time, probably more useful than emailing customer services after the event! He said he was going to have a word immediately.

Skiiltan · 24/02/2018 10:09

I'm a bit torn on this. On the one hand, if you see poor hygiene practice you should tell the manager and report the shop to the council's environmental health office. On the other hand, if people keep complaining about this shops will stop selling loose goods and force customers to buy pre-packaged stuff. I am already infuriated by the amount of packaging I have to dispose of after every shopping trip because so many people feel unable to consume a piece of fruit that someone else has touched. (Not to mention the amount of rotten fruit I'm forced to buy because every pre-packaged set of four apples or pears will contain at least one that is rotten.) And many superkarkets no longer sell loose rolls or croissants so I have to buy the number they decide I have to buy and dispose of a huge, bulky plastic carton.

CheekyRedhead · 24/02/2018 13:16

I work in a city centre with a small supermarket next door. The city has a major homeless problem. I've seen them in the shop fingering the loose bread rolls. It's put me off buying a roll for my soup but I get the guilts as its probably the only thing they will eat all day Sad

MavisPike · 24/02/2018 13:22

saw children picking up sugar cubes, licking them , then putting them back . Told the manager , who just shrugged
Disgusting

retirednow · 24/02/2018 14:08

Why cant people use the tongs at the bread counter, our pharmacy assistant is always sniffling and blowing her nose while serving customers, very hygienic.

greenharp · 24/02/2018 16:52

When people let their kids sit or stand in shopping trollies where the food gets put ... Who knows what they stood in before arriving at the store!

Tinkofhousepan · 24/02/2018 16:57

I always cringe when I see people who have long acrylic nails poking through the ends of gloves and serving food. Don't know why it makes me feel pukey but it really does!

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 24/02/2018 17:10

While it is perfectly acceptable to handle food products without gloves, you must also be adhering to a very strict code of hygiene.

So you should never touch your face, cough on/near/around food or into your hands etc. etc. Should any of these things occur, you should throw away any contaminated products and wash your hands immediately.

You would be absolutely right to make a complaint, OP. I work with food and this would not be tolerated or acceptable.
