To think he should rectify this?

We’ve just moved into our new house and when we got the keys booked a decorator to paint the whole place for us. He did a great job and we are really pleased.

However...we have now been in two days and the paint in the bathroom we are using (the other one isn’t quite ready to use yet but I guess will be the same) has awful stains all over the walls from every tiny splash from handwashing and from condensation after showers etc. All around the ceilings at the top of the walls is so badly stained and there are drip marks all over from where the walls have got damp and run. It is really very bad. We have an extractor fab which is on while we use the bathroom but it is obviously still getting damp. I messaged the decorator to ask him what he could suggest and his reply was that it was not a washable bathroom paint and that we would need to put the extractor fan on constantly and leave the windows open to avoid this or pay for a more expensive washable paint. When he was here this was never mentioned or given to us as an option as of course we would have paid the extra for a more suitable paint. It never entered our heads that this would happen and he didn’t warn us that it would.

His last reply says he can’t talk now as he’s busy and I’m worrying that will be the last we hear from him. The job cost us £1000 and we feel he is responsible here and should rectify it for us.

His job in the bathroom isn't suitable for purpose - him being the professional should have advised you about the paint. If he won't rectify it - I would be rating his business negatively wherever you can on social media.

maras2 · 23/02/2018 11:05

Bloody cowboy.
Who on earth paints a bathroom with anything but bathroom paint?
Agree with april If he won't communicate go to social media.

LifeBeginsAtGin · 23/02/2018 11:20

A good tradesperson should always advise you what is best.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 23/02/2018 11:27

Who bought the paint? If you bought it, did he say anything when he saw it?

StormTreader · 23/02/2018 11:32

There's a reason "bathroom/kitchen" paint exists! You cant just slap the cheaper standard paint on and expect it to cope, it just wont.

Travis1 · 23/02/2018 11:37

Did you supply the paint or did he? That would be the deciding factor really in where the responsibility lies.

agentdaisy · 23/02/2018 15:23

I'm guessing it's a standard matt paint that he's used. My parents accidentally used this and even touching the bathroom wall left a fingerprint that couldn't be cleaned off as you couldn't wipe the paint.

Bathrooms need proper bathroom paint or you get awful marks from steam and water drips round the sink. I'd avoid matt finish bathroom paint as it doesn't hold up as well as silk or satin finish bathroom paint ime.

Imo he should have said something before using the paint even if you bought it. He would know that using standard paint in a bathroom would end up with marks from water splashes and steam and should have warned you of this before opening any of the paint. If he'd warned you before opening the paint you could have taken it back and exchanged it for the right type.

If he bought the paint, even if you picked it, then he should have explicitly said that you need to buy the more expensive bathroom paint to prevent water marks.

You're paying for professional advice as well as professional decorating so he should have told you that standard paint is no good for bathrooms.

If he didn't tell you that you need proper bathroom paint then he should repaint it at his cost with the proper type of paint.

If he told you that it wasn't suitable paint but you said to use it anyway then you should pay to sort it.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/02/2018 15:36

Proper paint for a bathroom isn't expensive. He used the wrong product, end of story. A person who does this for a living should know the correct formula of paint to use in a bathroom. He should fix this immediately.

BocolateChiscuit · 23/02/2018 19:03

He bought the paint and didn’t say anything about there being an issue. He’s been in touch and says he’ll buy the paint but we have to pay for the time. So it’ll be another £65. Not ideal but i’ve agreed because i’m a soft shite

That’s not on at all! I’d be reporting him to trading standards frankly

Flupi · 23/02/2018 19:13

It’s awkward because you want the job done but he really has done a very unprofessional job, a bit unbelievable really. Makes me think he is new to the job? He should repair his bad handiwork for free. If a workman built a fence and the fence fell down the next day, you would expect him to come back immediately and make good. Similarly for your bathroom. At the very least don’t pay him in advance, make him wait a week or two, he may not ask you again, realising that it’s his error.

Gide · 23/02/2018 19:16

No, he buys paint, re-preps the walls and paints, no payment. He’s fucked up, not you. His problem.

thecatsarecrazy · 23/02/2018 19:57

I would be tempted to use someone else. Bathroom paint isn't expensive.

MidniteScribbler · 23/02/2018 20:15

I think he should do the job for free, and you pay just the difference between the normal house paint and the bathroom specific paint, which you would have paid for anyway.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 23/02/2018 20:19

I agree with midnight
Is he on Check A Trade or any such site? If so leave feedback when he has rectified the issue.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 23/02/2018 20:20

Or even Midnite Blush Sorry

LyannaStarktheWolfMaid · 23/02/2018 20:21

Crap paint. He’s cut corners. Yes, he should fix it.
