To think America is so in love with their murderous guns?

I just don't see it. That's all.
It makes no sense to me, how can people listen/watch the news and hear about children being killed by a gun and still feel the need to carry/own one?
All I hear about is how they have a right to own one and "ah but, the second amendment!" F**k that. I could care less about their precious second amendment. If it's contributing to the murder of thousands, and you still support it, you're deluded and need help. Sorry, but it's true. Enlighten me if you believe I'm mistaken.

Neah, you're engaging in unjustified sweeping generalisations now Peggy. I'll leave you to it, in a moment.

Every group thinks they are wonderful & their culture is the best, ime. Americans don't have a monopoly on that, at all.

FWIW, the biggest gun fans I ever met were some Turks! It's how they grew up.

specialsubject · 22/02/2018 20:40

Sadly unless an NRA activist gets his kid killed, he won't change. Same as Reagan, anti stem cell research until he needed it.

Oooeeeerrrrrindeed · 22/02/2018 20:45

They are a weak country in the hands of the muderous right and criminal gangs. The ban on devices that make guns into machine guns is just this meaningless horse shit. They're so weak they've not legislated on that despite the legislation on automatic weapons. Not a single american politcian has a backbone it would seem. They're whipping boys for a rich handful. A shame, but they think a few thousand dead americans a year is just fine. Then ahain nothing in america suggests they give a slightest care for humanity.

peggy2467 · 22/02/2018 20:53

@Oooeeeerrrrrindeed
Totally agree.
Trump fires everyone who attempts to challenge or disagree with him, making all other republican politicians afraid of him. He's a spineless narcissist and makes me sick to think people actually voted for him.

@lljkk
Hmm, I'm sure the turks you met were fond of guns, except from the statistics I just read, there were "only" 1,810 guns deaths in Turkey in 2013 (most recent statistic I could find).

How would banning guns work though? I mean, even here in the UK there is gun crime, armed robberies and shootings. In a country that has so many guns available now saying 'right, all you law abiding citizens, hand in your guns immediately. You are no longer allowed them' will just mean that the law abiding citizens no longer have guns but all the people who have unlawful requirements will still have them! I can see how it makes sense in relation to school shootings- teens would have fewer opportunities to procure a gun in order to go on the rampage if they weren't so widely available but it wouldn't be impossible. There would probably be a lot more home invasion type robberies if it were unlikely the residents had guns too. How would they get the huge number of guns in circulation now into the right hands?
I can laugh along at the sheer absurdity of Trump suggesting that teachers should be armed in case of a school shooter, guns laying around a classroom being a good idea (!!) and then a teacher shooting back in a chaotic situation like something out of a Western film with kids running about etc. But having said that if there were a chance of a shooter in my dd's school as is the case there I don't know that I wouldn't want the head to have a locked box containing a gun in a secure area. I know I'm glad we live here and not there!

I think the US should put some regulations on gun possession to reduce crime !!! I bought a Glock 19 because I think I need it in this situation to protect my family, and this is my first experience with a gun. I only know guns from video games. Before buying this gun, I read a little information about the essential parts of a bullet and the differences between shots and bulkmunitions.com/gun-maintenance-why-cleaning-your-gun-is-important/ on BulkMunitions. I took many exams before I started using the gun here in Canada. I also practiced by myself in my backyard. I shot targets. After a month of training, I got my license. This is how it should be, unlike in the US, where anyone can buy a deadly weapon!!!

This is a zombie thread.

Wiki

Gun ownership is the act of owning a gun, either legal or illegal. In 2018, Small Arms Survey reported that there are over one billion small arms distributed globally, of which 857 million (about 85 percent) are in civilian hands.[1][2] The Small Arms Survey stated that U.S. civilians alone account for 393 million (about 46 percent) of the worldwide total of civilian held firearms.[2] This amounts to "120.5 firearms for every 100 residents."[2]

Americans have been led to believe they are the best country in the world, and you HAVE to be proud to me an American. My father was American, therefore I have an American citizenship, I am NOT proud to be an American, not one bit. They have also been led to believe the whole world is evil and you should trust no one, and instead you should carry a gun and shoot everyone.
Nice stereotype there.

Have you renounced your citizenship yet?

Best move you could do for tax purposes anyway.

SourAppleChew · 19/07/2021 02:02

I’d rather live in a gun free country but if I lived in America I’d defo have one. I’ve twice been attacked by dogs in the UK. One was a pit bull type and I still count my lucky stars that it got hold of my jeans and not my leg as it was rag dolling me for a good 30 seconds before the owner came out the shop and grabbed it. Would’ve totally put a bullet in it!

MimiDaisy11 · 19/07/2021 02:03

I think it’s hard to change culture and come back from their gun obsession and also there are so many guns out there it’d be so difficult to deal with them. I think because of that many just can’t envisage or see a path to a country without them.

Also many have a weird notion that the 2nd amendment helps keep in place the 1st, and that without lots of citizens with guns politicians would take their rights away.

DramaAlpaca · 19/07/2021 02:04

ZOMBIE thread. Don't feed it.

Micemakingclothes · 19/07/2021 02:04

It’s not all Americans. Many of us don’t own guns and are in favor of strict gun laws.

Our last community annual founders day parade that took place before Covid, almost everyone in attendance was wearing an anti-gun sticker. There was a group handing them out. A very popular political candidate came through with a gun display. He was booed. He was not elected.

The gun nuts are a very vocal group, but they do not represent all Americans.

NiceGerbil · 19/07/2021 02:16

The fact there's more guns than people means that rolling back is pretty much impossible though surely.

NiceGerbil · 19/07/2021 02:17

My guess is that most people in USA want reform.

It's not going to happen any time soon though sadly imo.

SourAppleChew · 19/07/2021 02:24

@DramaAlpaca

ZOMBIE thread. Don't feed it.
So what. If there’s still a discussion to be had then it’s the same as any other thread. Don’t mean that in a snarky way.
EmeraldShamrock · 19/07/2021 02:37

Why resurrect an old thread? If the zombie risers want to discuss something start a fresh thread.
It's brave anyway if not silly.

SourAppleChew · 20/07/2021 03:48

Once people have started replying and the thread is rolling once again, what's wrong with continuing the discussion? Better than having loads of threads about the same topic.
