Contractors from insurance company were due to cone out and didn't, twice. First time was a whole day appointment (8-5) when i had to stay in, second time half a day (9-1). They offered £50 and i accepted. I'm just wondering now is that enough? I didn't lose earnings over it but obviously was massively inconvenient. Everyone i spoke to at the call centre was helpful and polite which made me less inclined to be grabby... However, i am now wondering if i was a mug for accepting their first offer of compensation? Would i have got more if I'd asked for it? Should i have got more anyway? What does everyone else think is reasonable?

How does cash in any way 'compensate' you?

falsepriest · 22/02/2018 12:11

I'd happily take £50 for staying at home all day. Sounds bliss! Grin

Whether you could have got more or not, wondering about it or being hyper-aware and trying to drive a hard bargain next time something similar happens isn't a recipe for happiness. You just end up feeling narked that they didn't give you even more. Spend the £50 on something you want that you wouldn't otherwise have bought.

AgentProvocateur · 22/02/2018 12:32

What were you compensated for if you had no loss of earnings?

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 22/02/2018 12:40

£50 to stay at home all day. Yes please.

I would have been pissed off at using 1.5days annual leave though as leave is very precious with regards to school holiday.

It's going back 25 years, but I was offered £10 by British Gas when they failed to keep an appointment. I'd taken time off work and when I mentioned that the £10 didn't compensate for the leave I'd taken, they said they would cover that if I had a letter from my employer stating my earnings for the day. As the PA to the Manager, I turned around a letter quite quickly and got about £40 out of them. Had I been at home anyway, I wouldn't have been so miffed and would have been more than happy with £10.

I suppose its me thinking of it as compensation, dont think he used that word, actually he didn't call it anything... Just 'we can offer you...'. More of a good will gesture than compensation i suppose. I'm not narked. It's just he seemed ever so slightly surprised when I said yep, that sounds good so i wondered...are you supposed to haggle?! Do they routinely offer lower than they're prepared to pay because they expect you to name some outrageous sum and then haggle it down again?
I work part time from home. So i haven't rally lost anything, just the freedom of one and a half days. £50 is a nice gesture, agreed.
