To think nobody recovers fully from an ankle injury?

I sprained my ankle badly on the 3rd of February. Since then I have read up about how to help recover and I have a physiotherapist appointment today. But it seems to be all doom and gloom and once it’s been injured it will never recover. Please reassure me if you have had an ankle injury and have never had it bother you again.

I broke my ankle as a teenager...very severe break. Both bones and an unstable fracture.
Took a long time to heal but I don't think it causes me any problems now.

Bluelady · 22/02/2018 09:30

I sprained my left ankle very badly a few years ago. It took six to eight weeks to even start feeling normal. I hardly remember doing it now, it's exactly the same as the other one.

I tore the tendons in my ankle about 20 years ago... I was on crutches for 4 weeks and had a load of physio.

It’s pretty much fine, it does sprain a bit easier than the other one if I fall, but other than that it’s been ok since it healed. It did take about a year to properly heal though.

Isittimeforbed · 22/02/2018 09:39

I had a really bad sprain about 20 years ago and still have occasional issues with it, especially as I do a job where I'm on my feet a lot. However I had no physio or other input for years after it happened and then when I did go they said it would have made a big difference if I'd dealt with it better at the time. So it's definitely worth you investing in now!

sueelleker · 22/02/2018 09:41

I sprained both my ankles(at different times!) more than 20 years ago. They still twinge a bit in cold/wet weather.

TJ2503 · 22/02/2018 09:51

I sprained my ankle really badly as a teenager (tendons torn etc). It has always been a bit weaker and my balance is slightly off on that side. As a result I have gone over on it several more times, so I would suspect it's generally a bit weaker than the other side. However I never really did my exercises or rehabbed it properly..... I am also a Physio....

My husband broke his ankle in his 20's. He's run umpteen marathons since then without any problems.

I did this recently. It was really bad. As soon as I could get my trainers on again (a couple of days) I started walking and getting back to normal. My experience with these things is you have to keep moving.

Leilaniiii · 22/02/2018 09:58

And also yoga (and as the PP suggested pilates) are very good for things like this. I had a bad back for 16 years and was in constant pain. A few weeks of yoga and the pain disappeared forever.

OurMiracle1106 · 22/02/2018 09:58

I had a metal plate and 8 pins fitted as a result of being hit by a car. The ankle healed and doesn’t cause me any pain or issues now.

Mrsknackered · 22/02/2018 10:01

I broke my ankle in July 2016. I had to have a jigsaw cast, they would have usually of operated on the break but as I was pregnant they allowed me to see how it healed first.

It doesn't cause me 'pain' but there's a definite weakness there. It aches after a long walk especially if it's very cold weather.

Annab1983 · 22/02/2018 10:02

Ourmiracle can I ask how long you took to get back to normal? I dislocated and broke my ankle in 3 places, almost 3 weeks post surgery still in a lot of pain and I can't put my heel down at all it's like USA frozen and am worried 😕

Annab1983 · 22/02/2018 10:02

Like it's frozen sorry!!

FreckledLeopard · 22/02/2018 10:06

I ripped all the ligaments in my ankle on a trampoline six years ago. I was on crutches for a month, the swelling and bruising was incredible and it took about a year for it to go back to its original size. But it's totally fine now - no problems at all.

Annab1983 · 22/02/2018 10:06

Should have mentioned have two plates and several screws in there too.. have physio next week and will ask them but would love to hear real life stories

Bluntness100 · 22/02/2018 10:07

I broke my ankle in two places in the summer. Basically my foot twisted and my leg stayed in place and it broke like a cork screw. I'm now running again and it's pretty much there. Some residual weakness if I try to tip toe and occasionally twinge if it's cold. It just takes time.

The consultant did say to me that it's better to break the bones than rip the tendons/ligaments as they take much longer to repair.

A sprained ankle should heal, don't worry.

PeerieBreeks · 22/02/2018 10:12

I had a spate of spraining my ankle as a teen. Didn't sprain it again till about 2 years ago (mid 40's) and haven't had any trouble since.

I don't think the sprain 2 years ago was in any way linked to the ones 30 years earlier!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 22/02/2018 10:12

Do your physio. I am hypermobile and constantly turn ankles and fall badly, so my ankles and feet now have lots of damage, some of which I'm possibly stuck with. I know this is more extreme than your injuries but I was a bit late seeking help and when I was younger, I was a bit lazy about the exercises.

Plugging away at physio exercises has helped loads and I know I could have done more sooner and been in a better position. Currently trying to really repair my left foot as it can't take me wearing most heels.

sonjadog · 22/02/2018 10:15

I had repetitive problems with my ankle over about a 2 year period maybe 5-7 years ago. Much hobbling around, visiting the chiropractor and physio. Now the problem has completely disappeared.

LIZS · 22/02/2018 10:15

I have sprained each ankle several times over the years. The best recovery I had was a course of physio, it took about 2 months of treatment but by then I could at least ski on it and have had minimal problems since. In all it was about 6 months after injury before I was unaware of it.

Loonyluna16 · 22/02/2018 10:15

Sorry to say but I tore 98% of my ligaments in my ankle when I was 14. I'm 26 this year and it still gets sore, bruised and swollen. Sad it's horrible and I hope you find something to help x

JaggyJobby · 22/02/2018 10:18

I broke my ankle about 4 years ago and once it heaped its been fine, I even play football now with no issues. I didnt actually get any physio for it either as it happened while living abroad.

Hoppinggreen · 22/02/2018 10:18
