AIBU you think I deserve a token bonus

I work for a private sector company (IT sector) and today it was announcd by dept heads that we would be getting bonuses in next months pay.
For background I've worked for the company for 6 years and up until end of November I worked in an admin support role for one team but then moved to a new dept from Dec. Since march 2017 I was assisting the new team for at least 1-2 hours a day at no extra salary, mainly because I had down time and I was getting through my assigned work quickly and hate being bored.
In my meeting today I was told that whilst my previous head had awarded me a bonus for my work there my current boss felt he couldn't justify giving me a bonus as I had only been with the team for 3 months.
AIBU to think a small token of appreciation for my time since March was justified- I haven't raised this with him as he got me off guard five mins before home time and I hadn't considered my previous work.
Should I just suck it up and learn or should I say something and risk the current nice atmosphere in the team ?

Suck it up, I'm afraid.

What’s the thinking behind the bonus? Is it standard end of year or for a specific project?

Crunchymum · 21/02/2018 19:13

March 2017 is 11 months?

imnottoofussed · 21/02/2018 19:24

Ate you getting the bonus the other boss awarded?

HuglessDuglas · 21/02/2018 19:25

@paperdoll just a standard non specific the company performed well bonus.

Standard bonuses range from £100-£1500 old boss has awarded me £250 which I will get.
I am more stung by the words "cannot justify" I think than the cash as when the tax comes off it would really be that much

So you are getting a bonus, but you really want two?

I think you should go in and tell him how you feel. Presumably if you had been with the old team for longer you would have had a bigger bonus from them? We read all the time about how men earn more than women because they ask for it. Perfect opportunity for you to do the same. I've done reviews before where men have asked for a pay rise at the end of a 3 month probationary period on the basis that they have performed well during probation. (Not that I'e given them one but it shows how much more neck they have.)

However, make sure you have a good and reasoned case for asking for something from this team too before you go in to see him.

It's not that I want 2 bonuses but I get that's how it looks - I just want what I thought I had earned.
I've just had a conversation with the lovely guy who replaced me on old team he's getting a bonus of £500 - he's new to the company and been in post for 3 months. I think if I had of remainded in old post I would have got £500 as that's what I got in previous years.
I understand old boss was a bit peeved I moved departments so was happy to get anything at all from that area.
Earlier this evening I felt that it would have been nice if new boss had of even given me £50 as a token bonus but now I just want to feel valued which I don't.
Sorry I know this is all a bit jumbled but my thoughts are all over the place which is why I can't tell just how unreasonable I am being?

Thank you @London mummy.
I definitely do not wish to sound like a petulant child I can demonstrate that I have outperformed initial expectations in the new as I was allocated more work at the beginning of January and again a few weeks ago - as I was getting through it more efficiently than my predecessor - and also there is the work I was doing for 11 months before officially joining the dept.

I think knowing a guy got £500 for a 3 month bonus sets you up really well to say that it is inappropriate to not give you a bonus for "only" 3 months and to go to HR and complain about unfairness if you don't get something. If, as you say the max bonus otherwise is £1500 why is this guy getting the annual equivalent of £2000 - which is nearly 10x what you got for 9 months? In the circumstances I think you should be asking for at least £1000 as a starting position.
