to think it should be team UK not team GB

they represent the United kingdom as people from northern Ireland compete for team gb (and yes i know isle of man and channel islands do aswell) so the term uk would not accurately describe our team but it would be more correct than team GB

Isle of Man would fit under Britain or British Islands wouldn’t it?

Perhaps the easiest solution would be to drop the ‘Great’. Can see the Daily Mail and Express having a field day though.

MongerTruffle · 20/02/2018 21:46

Britain is a colloquial term for the United Kingdom. The Isle of Man is a British Crown Dependency, and not part of the UK proper.

The use of GBR was the responsibility of the IOC, UKR was allocated to Ukraine.
The person saying the the British Isles do not geographically exist needs to get out more, of course it does, it does not exist as a political entity.

When, in 1922, the Parliament of Northern Ireland petitioned the King to excercise his option to accept them into the country (rather than join the newly-created Free State), the country changed its name to 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland', but the Olympic registration remained in the name GB (the IOC refused to allow a name change in the 1990s!)

Might help.

Only to people with no grasp of basic geography.

Only to people with no grasp of basic geography
Yes
That’s why it’s a colloquial term.

AgnesSkinner · 21/02/2018 07:17

The official British Olympic Assiciation team name is the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team.

Team GB is a brand name.

Your link is to the names of the National Olympic Committees, not to the team names.

The British Olympic Association (BOA) is the National Olympic Committee (NOC) for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The BOA is responsible for the participation in the Olympic Games of athletes from GB and NI, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and UK Overseas Territories which do not have their own National Olympic Committee.

No. That isn;t what that means. And it is not the colloquial term, its just the wrong term.

Ofthread · 21/02/2018 09:30

Don’t know if anyone has said this yet but ‘Team GB’ was part of a rebrand when the UK team was not doing very well at all. So it’s marketing. Lots of people were against it and I notice some commentators on tv always say ‘Team Great Britain and Northern Ireland’.

I have nothing to add to this thread apart from I am thoroughly enjoying it. I love the comment about Ulster not existing and the heated debate. As an aside, when I type Ulster on my iPhone it pops up with a 🇬🇧 - does that not piss off those from Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal? My dad would furious (probably spinning in his grave)

mikeyssister · 22/02/2018 13:31

Nope I've never had the union flag pop up on my phone. Where are you typing it?
