I live near Preston and travel to London regularly for work, cheapest way for me is to go from Preston to Lancaster first then get train back from Lancaster to London it’s madness but illegal to do it any other way
DS works in Lancaster so sometimes I cadge a lift off him n save the train fare
Why should I have to get up earlier and waste over an hour though?

I reckon it was to confuse the ticket inspector. I was on a train once opposite two men when the ticket inspectors came along. They boarded the train just after first couple of inspectors had passed by. The second 'wave' came along and the guys claimed that their tickets had been checked (lie). Then one of the guys called one of the inspectors back to ask the best route to take to a certain place that weekend.

After the inspector left, he explained to his friend that it was to throw the inspector off, because who on earth would make conversation with a ticket inspector if you didn't have a ticket Hmm

I've definitely bought a rail ticket from one destination to another and then left at a station half way along the line. Of course you are allowed to do this! Lots of people will need to change trains and the food etc. Will be the other side of the barriers. If you've got a long wait they won't make you hang around the station.

I reckon he was doing a bought a ticket from an earlier stop and getting on later. Or maybe he got the wrong train and had to change at that station and he didnt want to admit it to the conductor.
