To think this is really bad customer service

I will be as brief as I can but it's a bit long, sorry. I am Irish and living in Ireland (relevant)

On Tuesday I bought a jacket at a large international retailer, I paid with a One4All voucher (you know the type accepted across hundreds of different retail outlets). Anyway, when I was paying i asked if i could return it if not suitable and get the refund to the gift card, I was told no problem at all.

So today I went with my DC's to return the jacket. The girl that served me was so abrupt and rude, she told me she couldn't return to the card, I told her I was told i could, she said no, I said I would take a cash alternative, she said no, she was really rude and was raising her voice, I asked her not to raise her voice to me and I asked for a manager, she said she was one. After a few minutes she went to get a colleague, she asked the problem, I told her and I said that I was really not impressed with how I had been spoken to. The original assistant then pointed at me and really sternly/rudely says "You Irish I thought you were supposed to be friendly", I said my nationality was nothing to do with it, I asked where she was from and she said Croatia, I said if I started a sentence with "You Croatians" to her it wouldn't be accepted and that worked both ways. At this point I am getting upset, there are other people in the queue, the other girl issues me a refund card (not offered to me by other girl), I said I wanted their names on the receipt as I was calling customer services. I leave upset.

Go to car with kids and call customer service.

After the call I realised I left my original gift card in an envelope on the counter when I left, it has more money on it so dd (12) goes in to ask, she says "My mam was in a few minutes ago and left an envelope with gift card on the counter", rude assistant says nobody left anything and turns away, dd stays for a minute not sure what to do and the assistant turns back to her and says is she sure, dd said yes it's s One4All card and the assistant said "Oh yeah the rude lady I remember now" and took it out of a drawer.

I am so annoyed, I was never rude at any point, obviously there was more over and back and I won't bore you with anymore she said this and she said that but I was never rude, for a finish I told her she had no business in a customer facing role but that was it.

I am waiting on customer service to email me back so I can tell them what she said to dd. Aibu to think that's not on at all? The customer service lady said she would email me a reference number this afternoon but she hasn't, aibu to follow it up if she doesn't?

Every store has to take back items it's called a cooling off period it's normally at least 7 days tells you on the back of most receipts some are 28 days but stores can refuse after that time. As long as unused in it's packaging not perishables or underwear

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 18/02/2018 22:03

Bloody hell, you can tell you're on AIBU when people are criticizing the OP for recieving and using a gift card

😂😂😂

squiggleirl · 18/02/2018 22:06

haterain what 'I'm on about' is there's no faculty to reload the one4all ( post office) cards. None. You can't add anything back onto them once used.

If that is the case, staff in shops would do well to know that. I used one of these cards last week, and was told if there was any issue with what I'd purchased I couldn't get a cash refund or store credit, but that the value would have to be put back onto the card.

As to why people use them? A lot of employers use them as a means of giving an annual tax-free bonus. An employer can give an employee a tax-free gift of up to 500 euro each year. This can't be money. A one-4-all card is the most broadly acceptable way of giving such a gift.

theymademejoin · 18/02/2018 22:07

@Mrschainsawuk - Cooling off period is only for online purchases. Shops only have to exchange/repair/refund if item is faulty. However, many shops will accept returns if you change your mind, even though they are not obliged to. If they offer to do so as one of the terms and conditions of a sale, then a customer would be entitled to return an item as per those conditions.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 18/02/2018 22:10

Presumably the OP wouldn't have taken the item back if the store didn't offer return and exchange? Either way, the assistant was very rude and could have handled it all better.

I didn't mean my one4all card comment seriously, it's obviously not the OPs fault, so sorry OP, I should have said that. Although for anyone thinking of buying one, please don't if you can avoid, they often cause aggro- for staff and customers. Blush

squigglegirl I hadn't used one in a while but was sure I was told in other retailers in the past to hold on to the card for returns too

Honestly I am a bit surprised so many people thought it was the refund I was asking about, it is was it is, most international retailers offer one, I did ask to confirm, but all that aside my aibu was more about what she said to me and my daughter, for me, the refund was secondary, maybe that wasn't clear, but others seem to think the workings of a gift card is more important Confused

Nope not true, “cooling off” periods only apply to things purchased via distance selling (online or phone).

Unless faulty, retailers are under no obligation whatsoever to accept a return unless the item is faulty and you weren’t already made aware of it at the time of purchase (Eg buying an item knowing it had a fault and you were still willing to purchase).

Most retailers do allow returns though as a form of “goodwill”.

Independentstateofeyebrows · 18/02/2018 22:24

Unless faulty no store is obligated to take anything back
It is if at the point of purchase you ask whether the item can be returned and are told 'No problem'

Whatshallidonowpeople · 18/02/2018 22:24

You are not entitled to return things because they don't fit or you change your mind. So yabu

MissEliza · 18/02/2018 22:25

I honestly don't care if you were a PITA, she can't say ' You Irish ...' Shocking.

DuchessofStBridget · 18/02/2018 22:35

whatshallIdonowpeople OP is not asking about refund policies, they're asking about the behaviour of a staff member.

Nocabbageinmyeye · 18/02/2018 22:52

Thank you to everyone who actually got what I was asking, I'll wait and see if they get back to me before I decide what to do. I still don't think "You Irish" is ok and I think it was a shitty thing to say to dd, clearly, to some, neither were as bad as me asking for the refund I was told I could have though Hmm
