Believing in ghosts

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 18/02/2018 19:24

Taken off the back of the ‘conspiracy theory’ thread made me think about people believing in ghosts.
I personally believe as I’ve seen it, as has my mum, Nan and DP.
We have a ghost whom we call Mary. No particular reason we just use that when talking about her so the kids don’t get scared if we say ghost.
It all started 9 years ago when we first moved here. As it was a very harsh winter we had all windows closed (usually sleep with them open) at around 1am we heard a massive bang. Turned on the side light to see 3 deodorants all fallen on the floor. This went on for 8 nights in a row, it became normal and didn’t surprise us. A few months later I saw a white ghostly figure of a women standing over my sons cot. As I live for this kind of stuff I was not bothered. Since then we’ve witness more and more things. When you tell others some believ and some don’t. One of my friends used to take the piss out of me until one day he stayed at a relatives house in the countryside and witness a strange ghost like figure. It’s true what they say, seeing is believing. On my bucket list is to visit some of the most haunted places in America.
I tried to find out if anything had happened before we move here but from what I can make out it’s a saintly town which has only ever had one murder in over 100 years and a was severely affected by the great storm of 1987.
Who else believes?

I have seen something I thought was a ghost when I was 9. Now I’m not so sure. Sometimes it seems like it must have been a dream.

I also saw my grandfather in he town where I went to university. He lived over 400 miles away. He had also died the previous night unbeknown to me at the time. I was so convinced it was him I left my friend alone in the cafe to chase him down he street. I honestly thought he was making a surprise visit. I don’t know what I saw, but it clearly wasn’t him

Laiste · 18/02/2018 19:54

I believe we don't know everything.
I believe that we can't explain everything.

Do i believe that actual spirits of actual dead people are actually sometimes visible to the eye? 99% No.

Have i experienced a 'haunting' of some description? Yes.
Did i 'want' to, am i 'into' it? No.
Did i see a figure? No. It was inanimate objects moving.
Did it scare me? Not at the time strangely.
So what do i believe? .... I don't know.

I used to think it was all bollocks. Now i believe we don't know it all yet.

phoenixtherabbit · 18/02/2018 19:56

We have a resident ghost. I've never seen him but I know he's there. He stands behind me all the time and I always think it's dp and it's not. Hea not threatening. Doesnt bother me.

Dp has thought I was crackers for about 3 years. Then he noticed him too. And the kids. Nobody's scared though.

Birdsgottafly · 18/02/2018 19:58

tabbymack this subject came up on a Soap. One person having it was a former Vicar, it didn't go down well when every religion ever was sited as having less if a base than believing in Ghosts.

So we don't respect anybody who is religious?

As well as Ghosts, there are electrical outlines left, or whatever they are called. This we know and is proven.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/02/2018 19:59

I 110% believe. I've never actually seen anything, but I've always believed in those things.
I also believe in the after life.

The night before my sister rang to tell me she was pregnant. I'd had a dream that i saw my mum holding a baby. ( obviously my then future nephew). My dad had a fear of dying and not saying goodbye.
He died in hospital it the early hours. It happened very quickly and suddenly as he wasn't expected to die. He came to me in my dreams and said. I just wish I could have said goodbye and we chatted for a while. When I went to see him. Although his eyes were closed and they say they are the windows to the soul. I could see all over his face that he was happy and at peace. I could still see his soul IYSWIM.
.
Also at my dads funeral. My sisters FIL told us later on at my dads wake that Had seen an orb In the crematorium.

MrsDilber · 18/02/2018 19:59

This stuff fascinates me, but I am skeptical. With all the CCTV, all millions, neigh, billions of mobile phones with great cameras in the world, definitive evidence should've been captured by now. I'm talking first story on the six o'clock news, evidence. But there is none. Nothing good enough. Nothing clear enough, and I've looked.

Also orbs - orbs are not ghosts.

Whilst were talking about it, why do ghosts wear clothes? We come into this world baked, how can a pair of socks be a ghost.

Also, why no cavemen ghosts.

There are also plenty of stories about ghost dogs, why not ghost rats, ants, snakes, dinosaurs - they're always pets - why?? Do you know how many trillion rats the afterlife would have.

I still find this stuff like catnip, it fascinate me.

Ps. I have paragraphed this, but lately my posts haven't been.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 18/02/2018 20:00

Do I believe in ghosts? Yes.
Do I believe ghosts are "shades of dead people"? No.

I think the whole subject is totally fascinating, but I that the source is very much our own minds.

Birdsgottafly · 18/02/2018 20:01

We don't have a proper explanation why when someone has owned a click for a long will it stops when they die.

I didn't believe NY GM when she told me that the clock stopped on the time my GF died, until I stayed in hers and she was away.

DioneTheDiabolist · 18/02/2018 20:02

hardened seamen
GrinGrinGrin

MadMags · 18/02/2018 20:03

But how come nobody has ever been able to capture or record one??

GrumpyOldBagFace · 18/02/2018 20:04

I'm so glad someone else laughed at the hardened seamen too Grin

SmashedMug · 18/02/2018 20:07

I don't believe in ghosts or anything. I think every single ghost experience can be explained in a non paranormal way. At the same time though, I wouldn't go out of my way to try and disprove someone's opinion that they had seen a ghost though because sometimes people have a reason to be desperate to believe due to loss etc. I wouldn't want to be the arse who's trying to explain away something they genuinely believe happened.

Laiste · 18/02/2018 20:07

Behave! Grin

But there is LOADS of 'captured footage'. How you prove or disprove is another matter. I imagine 99.9% of it is crap but you can't say there isn't footage!

EbonyJade · 18/02/2018 20:08

I definitely don't believe in ghosts.

I work in a hospital but have never seen any ghosts there.

I've seen quite a lot of actual dead and dying people (including family) and they have never returned to haunt me.

That's why I believe we have just one life and we should make the most of it.

Birdsgottafly · 18/02/2018 20:13

I was going to put Sailor, but thought they didn't sound very hard.

EbonyJade · 18/02/2018 20:14

However I have friends & colleagues who believe in ghosts, orbs, psychics & other woo.

They believe that random white feathers, butterflies, robins & other creatures / objects are signs from dead people.

3 of them even believe the magpie rhyme to be true fact!!

And most of them believe in god, spirits, angels & the afterlife.

I never say much as I know it brings comfort to them all after losses.

Laiste · 18/02/2018 20:16

birds - you're just digging a deeper hole Grin Don't worry.

It sounds ridiculous but one of my musings concerning 'do family or x members of the household drop by as spirits after they die' is what if they drop by at inappropriate times, IYSWIM?

I loved my dad dearly, he died here in this house. Do ghost believers believe he can see us all the time? Or at any time? Confused

Creambun2 · 18/02/2018 20:17

People who believe in ghosts need to get a reality check.

Chattycat78 · 18/02/2018 20:17

No idea. I have 2 dead parents and sometimes wonder why they haven’t come back to visit me if such a thing is possible....

MrsLinManuelMiranda · 18/02/2018 20:18

I am a very sceptical person and years ago I would have said ghosts definitely do not exist. But I saw what I am convinced was a ghost, no other explanation for what I saw. However some people believe in them, some don't. Some may change their opinion, others won't. I respect the fact that some people will think believers are mad/stupid/delusional or whatever. I respect your non-beliefs , but I will not change my opinion.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 18/02/2018 20:18

It’s similar to deja vu though isn’t, no one can prove or disprove deja vu.
People will tell you it’s a glitch in the matrix .
I often feel like I’m in a situation I’ve already been in. Exact people, detail, moment everything. It plays on mind for a while.
I was a big fan of the tv series fringe. And as much as some people will think it’s far fetched. It does make you think. I was top in science in my class and some of thier explanations actually make sense.there are a lot of what ifs.
What if the ghosts we see are simply a representation of those on a parallel universe colliding with our world.
Don’t worry people in my life already know I’m crazy so a few more won’t matter.
I’m really into that sorta stuff, I did wanna be a FBI or CSI so it’s not intirely out of character. I just find all the unexplained fascinating. People can try to explain it, but in the end situations are what we make them.

icelollycraving · 18/02/2018 20:19

I believe. We had a ghost at our home when growing up.
I have a resident ghost at work too. When I was talking to an acquaintance who works in the same street she asked if we have a ghost in the basement. There are ghost walks for tourists around the area I work.
If someone doesn’t believe that’s their choice.

Tfoot75 · 18/02/2018 20:22

Many millions of people die and their clocks don’t stop at the time they died........!

It’s the power of the human mind that is absolutely fascinating. It shocks me that people think ‘my sister’s friend’s husband saw such and such’ as proof and don’t consider that you could literally see anything, and it doesn’t mean it’s there. Understanding that probably makes you an awful lot less likely to see something you’re not expecting though!

It’s just an example of blind faith that strange happenings that we don’t understand are automatically linked with people we know or don’t know who have died. Rationally, deodorant falling onto the floor has a load of scientific explanations that aren’t a random dead person putting it there for no reason.

EbonyJade · 18/02/2018 20:24

If there are ghosts then I hope none see me on the loo...

Eolian · 18/02/2018 20:28

No, I 100% think ghosts are made up.

I was a big fan of the tv series fringe. And as much as some people will think it’s far fetched.

Ummm... yes, I loved Fringe too. But it is fictional. It's not meant to be real in any way!
