Hi all,

Am posting here for traffic as 5 year old DS has developed a strange rash on his hips.

He has had a bit of a cold and a slightly raised temperature and has been tired for the past couple of days so I'm thinking a viral rash. It's not itchy and isn't bothering him but it's come up really quickly this evening.

He's asleep in bed now but I keep going and checking on him to see if it's spread any more....this is very much for my peace of mind!!!

Any idea what sort of rash this is??

It looks like urticaria/hives. The vast majority of hives in DC without known allergies are virus related. DS was 3 the first time it happened and recovering from a cold. They tend to pop up where they're warmest and often disappear from that spot and pop up elsewhere. It's a common viral response in small children.

Antihistamines help.

Urticarial vasculitus. Possible ringworm if it persists, or discoid eczema.

Agree with pp, looks like urticaria and it's a common misconception that urticaria is caused by allergy only. Commonest cause in children is viral infection. Anti-histamines help a bit, but viral induced urticaria can wax and wane for days, so don't fret if it does that or changes location. Chronic urticaria means it's be going for at least 6 weeks.

If you’re worried, do measure the welts and monitor their growth and change. Ideally you want the pronunced ring to fade. If the skin in the centre appears grey, or child complains of pain in joints or you note swelling, call doctor right away. A low percentage menthol/ aqueous cream will work wonders.

Looks like slapped cheek, it forms into a lacey pattern and can spread all over the body.

Another vote for urticarial rash. And agree with Notbad that in children it is very often due to a virus.

Thanks again everyone.

I think it must be viral as it's basically gone from his legs now but is still on his arms.

Still sleeping amazingly considering the amount of prodding and pocking I've done along with the beeping of the thermometer!!

Will try and get some myself now.
