Neighbour cooking what smells like pure methane

I know there is nothing I can do but christ almighty!!
Surely if you live in a block of flats where you know the smell of your cooking travels it's just polite not to cook something that smells like a sewer has opened up inside everyone else's flats!
I would rather stick my nose directly up DP's arse and ask him to let rip!
I know IABU but it really is an offensive smell and my air wick just isn't tackling it!
Even Dcats are offended, and they usually like to follow DP into the toilet!

Tripe? That stinks.

FannyWisdom · 16/02/2018 18:02

Our sewers fart.
After a big rain that must clear some log jams there is a periodic guff of sewer fart.

This is what makes natural gas smell.

Lana I shall not be accepting any food packages from opposite neighbour! She looks the sort to be drugging people. Seems very sweet when you speak to her but you know she's up to something! (maybe I've watched too many films)

Phoebe - I don't know how these are built but I hope there's nothing dead.

The smell just suddenly appeared out of nowhere. I feel a bit bad that I asked DS if he had done something and I've even tried to see if the blame lies with the DCats (their litter trays are still fresh and they haven't moved in about 5 hours)

I cooked a curry with 10 carolina reaper chillis once. Had to leave the room as none of us could breathe. But it wasn't stinky, just poisonous Grin

Disclaimer: I cooked it in a detached house in winter so even with all the doors and windows open and when the roof blew off I don't think the neighbours were affected

crashbangwhallop · 16/02/2018 18:09

Redding you are far braver than I. I can't even take a little bit of heat. DP likes to try and sneak chilli flakes into everything (even bolognese) and then deny he has done it thinking I won't notice.
I think he's trying to convince me I am being picky and he wants to go "AHAH you didn't even notice the chilli in it so you DO like spicy food!"
I've caught him out every single time. I'm hoping he will stop soon because I'm fed up with cooking a spare pizza with dinner just in case he's done it.

We don't have gas in this building according to buildings boff DP (just electricity for everything including heating). He believes it has to be sewers and will be home in about half an hour to investigate. I've told him it doesn't smell outside but he has decided I must be wrong.
I would really like to be right about this. I do enjoy rubbing how right I am in his face but I'm a bit dim so I don't get to do it very often.

Are your neighbours (where you think the smell is coming from) originally from overseas?

It’s Chinese New Year so if they’re Chinese they could be cooking something special to celebrate?

OTOH when I lived in Singapore the maids from the Philippines liked to cook some kind of fish and boil it in vinegar....you could be walking past an apartment and smell it from more than 100 paces away!

Or if they are from Africa it could be ‘bush meat’. I know nothing about it other than from previous threads on MN, but the importation of bush meat is illegal into the UK but it does still get through - and apparently it has an extremely vile, pungent smell.

Good luck in trying to find out what the actual cause is!

XmasInTintagel · 16/02/2018 18:46

If it smells like rotting cabbage, its more likely to be something rotting than someone's dinner.
Maybe someone has gone away and left the kitchen bin full? Or perhaps a rat has died in the wall or floorspace.

The Scandinavian’s seem to be particularly guilty of eating pungent food. Are any of your neighbours Swedish.
