It's for my DGGM (great grandma) who is turning 85.

I will be sending her a parcel (she lives abroad) that can only be up to 2kg.
I've had DS(3) make a little card and I've bought a small canvas and put DS1 and DS2 handprints on them. I will also stamp their names on and date them and make it nice. I hope it's not tacky.

But I'm struggling with an actual gift as I'm not sure what I could get her at this age, she doesn't go out much anymore and lives with my DGM and DGF (daughter and son in law) and has pretty much everything provided. And obviously there's the weight restriction.

Help please?

How about seeing if there is something bear where she lives she can go to as an experience gift...like a voucher for afternoon tea or something she may like.
My nan always loved a picture of the family. Or some nice slippers x

Blackteadrinker77 · 16/02/2018 16:31

A pillow case with children's picture on?

Herbal tea

Have a jigsaw made of her favourite landmark that hold memories.

IJustLostIt · 16/02/2018 16:36

A lot of stores will deliver abroad and have gift wrapping available, so you can avoid the weight limit that way. Try www.notonthehighstreet.com or Etsy for things that can be delivered overseas/personalised/gift wrapped.

Bluelady · 16/02/2018 16:38

If she lives abroad, is there anything she can't get that she misses. At 85 she probably loves good soap, dusting powder, etc. A pillowcase with a picture of your children on it would make me ask wtf?!

NewYearNewMe18 · 16/02/2018 16:49

Has anyone suggested a spa day yet

Grin
Lipniki · 16/02/2018 16:53

Not sure, I live abroad and would appreciate any favorites we can't get here.
Check out parcel2go though. Royal Mail is crazy expensive, is that why you have a weight limit?

Lipniki · 16/02/2018 16:55

If she doesn't go out much and lives in Europe, where we don't really do carpet, then some boot slippers with rubber non slip soles.

counterpoint · 16/02/2018 16:56

A big bag of rose scented pot pouri. It's light and it'll make her think of an English country garden whenever she passes it.

BackforGood · 16/02/2018 17:09

If there is something you can think of, then you could get it delivered to her directly, rather than buying it and posting yourself, which takes away the weight worry.

Has she moved away from her home, or have you ? If it is her, then something she misses and can't get out there would work, but not if it is you that has moved!

What about a calendar with photos of either your dc, (or all her GGC if there are others), so she can have it on display throughout the year?
If you want to spend more, then perhaps them send money for her and a friend to go out for afternoon tea or something ?

Passthecake30 · 16/02/2018 17:11

My mum is 80, she prefers practical things she can use. Handcream, sweets, clothes, bag, purse, voucher for eating out etc.

NomsQualityStreets · 16/02/2018 17:23

Thanks for the replies, for the people suggesting days out - there's nothing local to her (quite rural) and she's not really one for that sort of thing either.

I'm thinking maybe a nice frame with DS1 and 2s pics on it?
And maybe a lovely soft scarf as she always wears one for church?

I'm not sure if they sound nice,

Biscuiteers delivers overseas and one of their tins always seems to go down very well with recipients.

Lipniki · 16/02/2018 17:27

I tend to use moonpig a lot for cards and frames. They have some nice stuff on there and send worldwide.
Where is she, you? Are there any restrictions on what you can send.

I think the frame sounds lovely. We send my 90yo Nan pictures the kids have drawn and she loves them.

mydietstartsmonday · 16/02/2018 17:27

A Photo of the children I am sure will be treasured. A lovely scarf she can wear to church and say to her friends this is from my granddaughter overseas would be perfect.

mydietstartsmonday · 16/02/2018 17:29

Funny story when my nanna was alive, we went to a posh hotel for lunch. She took all the sugars with the hotel's name on them, so she could get them out at meal times and boast her granddaughter from overseas took her there.

Lipniki · 16/02/2018 17:33

Oh yeah when I said 'some boot slippers with rubber non slip soles.' it wasn't because of her age, I have some and they are the best things ever Grin

NomsQualityStreets · 16/02/2018 19:24

Ok still browsing, is there any more companies who ship worldwide?

BatFacedGirl · 16/02/2018 20:04

I wouldn't go overboard with too much kid printed stuff. Yes the odd thing is lovely but a proper present is better. Some parents think that something plastered with their kids faces is a good enough gift but I think you're wise to also look for a present just for her

Lipniki · 16/02/2018 20:16

Moonpig
Book depository (free worldwide postage)
Amazon (their postage can be high though)
I generally get things sent to my parents and then send huge 30kg boxes over with p2G using UPS for £18 +vat

Can you tell we get a lot sent Grin marmite.

Lipniki · 16/02/2018 20:18

Oh and M & S and some other stores ship to Europe.

Where are you & Grandmother?
