AIBU to not go on a red light?

I was driving today and pulled into the filter lane to turn right, it has a separate right arrow for when it is our turn to go. All the lights were on red to go straight and right so I obviously stay where I am.

This idiot pulls up behind me beeping at me, pointing at the light and shouting at me to go! I wouldn't because it's red and red means stop?

He then followed me into the carp ark to shout at me and call me names all because I followed what I believe the highway code states!
This was in England btw, I know in America it's different.

Was I right?

Based on what you've said YANBU.

My dh drives for a living and thinks he's superior to everyone on the road. The number of times he's shouted/beeped/sworn at somebody perfectly following the Highway Code is just embarrassing. I hate going out in the car with him because if he's not critiquing my driving, verbally abusing other drivers for driving correctly then he's almost killing us due to his own poor car driving. He drives his truck very well but when in a car he's a menace. Unfortunately, OP, some people are just dicks on the road no matter how well you yourself drive.

There is one that I know of the whilst it has its own filter it is not governed by the red lights. The poles do not cover the three lanes it stops at the second lane. It does cause lots of confusion and beeps and every few year gets a mention in the local newspapers. Have no idea why the do not just change it.

carefreeeee · 16/02/2018 15:05

I don't understand at all. Why is there any doubt? Why was he pointing at a red light and beeping at you?

Is there a filter lane with separate light that you didn't see, or a green light for straight that he got confused by?

wheresmycake · 16/02/2018 15:14

Even if there was a light you couldn't see meaning you should have moved, following you to the car park to yell abuse is not ok. You weren't being dangerous - slightly delaying his journey at most. No excuse for intimidating you.

Also, if someone started beeping their horn in stationary traffic/ yelling abuse at me, I would probably panic and freeze. YADNBU

@SlothMama He then followed me into the car park to shout at me and call me names

EVEN IF you had mistakenly stopped on a green light, it STILL doesn't warrant such nasty behaviour. Lights take, what, a minute or two, tops, to cycle through. And if he was in such a goddamn blinking rush to be on his way, then he wouldn't have had spare moments to follow you and start yelling!

At most a quick beep to alert you, but that? Way out of order.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 16/02/2018 15:38

We have a junction like this. The right filter arrow comes on towards the end of the cycle, but when the main green light comes on you pull forward past the line and wait.

If the light change to red and you are past the stop line at the lights I would wait for it to be clear and go. We have to do this as our filter arrow sometimes doesn't come on (I think it only works in peak times)

Waiting past the line for the next cycle would prevent the other cars from using the junction so proceeding would be least obstructive. Of course if you're behind the stop line and the lights are red, stay put

'Are you sure there wasn’t a separate light for the filter lane?

I pulled up behind a woman yesterday, happily sat waiting at the red lights. Only she hadn’t noticed the filter lane had it’s own light and the green arrow was on.'
read the post she said there was and it was on red its an obvious answer that the op was right.

SlothMama · 16/02/2018 16:00

Sorry for my slow reply I was at work :)

There was a box on the light with an arrow to say when you can turn right but the light was on red. I'll get a link on google maps to it now

This is where it happened, the filter light is behind the other traffic lights. I was waiting at the first filter lane bit when he pulled up behind and started beeping at me to go

A red light is a red light.

His behaviour is odd, and wrong.

ChocFudgeLover · 16/02/2018 16:53

Both lights on red. You were right
