To dislike this sort of all users email...

“All,
It has come to my attention that....”

Is this just me? I was under a period of intense pressure at work recently. Most things were washing over me but then another of these peremptory emails arrived and it raised the stress levels higher.

The person sending these is the person we are supposed to go to if we think we might have been negligent.....

The sender also uses “myself” instead of “me” but now IABU I know.

The sender is not my boss (I am self-employed) but is a risk manager.

Do you mean the sort where 1 person has made a mistake and a boss emails everyone with a kind of 'this has happened-please don't do it' kind of thing-rather than just email the mistake-maker iyswim?

ForalltheSaints · 16/02/2018 18:47

Superfluous language.

Glumglowworm · 16/02/2018 18:57

In my office these are usually when someone has fucked up and to get out of the blame they’ve claimed it’s a training issue. Occasionally it genuinely is an issue that nobody was aware of. 90% of the time we had been told, I remember and do it correctly as do most of my colleagues. But as the paper trail isn’t there to prove this, the person who fucked up is successful at avoiding blame. However now you’ve all been told so if you do the same fuck up you will get the blame. So don’t fuck up.

There’s a few people in particular who will blame every error they ever make on a training issue. It’s never just that they forgot, or misunderstood, or misremembered, or couldn’t be bothered, or just messed it up. I can’t stand people who won’t take responsibility for their mistakes. (Sorry side rant there!)

Where I work "allstaff" emails are sent mainly by those that can't CBA to only email the staff that they need to. All that happens is that the emails don't get read.

But then I get pissed off with those that feel the need to hit "reply all", as if they need to show that their input is important to all.

gamerwidow · 16/02/2018 19:10

I’ve been guilty off this where I have caught someone doing something wrong and they’ve said ‘oh I didn’t know that was wrong, everyone else does it’. I usually am 99% sure that actually they did know and everyone else isn’t doing it but in case they raise a grievance later I have to be seen to address the issue with the team rather than singling someone out. It would be easier to just call the person out on it but it’s hard to prove.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 16/02/2018 19:12

Ooh, replies!

It’s the officious tone that really gets under my skin.

Before this person arrived, th actual owner might occasionally email us all saying “hi guys can we all please make sure we do x because y”

Gamer, it sounds as though you are a manager? Whereas I am self employed. I have no manager and dislike being addressed in this way.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 16/02/2018 19:20

Polly, I guess it’s that (i) this person is not the boss and (ii) if the owner had addressed me in this tone when I joined, I wouldn’t have stayed for long!

I find it's more of a risk manager thing, iysim?

They probably know its a personal fuck up but are just putting out a warning, and if the culprit did use the "everyone does it" excuse they have to cover their backside as that is part of the job role.

PollyMycroft · 16/02/2018 19:22

Yanbu to be annoyed at an officious tone-I think that more care should be taken in texts / emails generally. They can come across wrong even when it isn't intended.

falsepriest · 16/02/2018 19:24

Very handy button on your keyboard right under "Insert". Go mad!

Laiste · 16/02/2018 19:25

Lurker,
Should I just assume the sender is used to this sort of thing from a previous role?
Trouble is, it is changing the culture.
Also, it makes me not read her emails and not want to tell her if there is a problem.

OP posts:
gamerwidow · 16/02/2018 19:48

Yes I am a manager I agree it’s an officious tone. I would probably say ‘just a reminder to all that we need to do x and y if you do z. Let me know if your not sure on the above and I’ll go through with you’. I would have to sens the email to everyone though even if they did find it irritating.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 16/02/2018 20:00

Thanks gamer,

I have no objection to the all users element.

I guess I would argue that the officious tone creates a risk. The tone makes me less likely to tell this person if there is an actual problem.

I've done this often- to keep everyone in the loop. So if someone does X after it's been made clear they should not, then everyone will be aware that they've been told not too.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 17/02/2018 18:48

Thanks snow,
Presumably you don’t use such awful language though?
