To wonder why NHS GPs don't use dipstick test to test for strep throat?

I get the impression that when you go to your NHS GP with a bad sore throat, they don't typically do a dipstick test for streptococcus ...why not? Wouldn't it make diagnosis (and prescription of ABs) easier and more exact?

85% of sore throats will be gone in ten days whether bacterial or viral the presence of strep doesn't mean that antibiotics are needed.

@PerfectlyDone - is Strep bucking the trend, then, for more aggressive / resistant-to-ABs bacteria?

Sorry, I missed your question.

Yes, it is less virulent and less likely to cause complications now than it used to be.

Antibiotic resistance is a whole other problem, nothing to go with virulence or likelihood to cause longterm trouble.

As pigs said most sore throat, whatever their cause will settle without antibiotics. Some of course don't and a Quinsy throat is an ENT emergency.
