to report sibling missing abroad

DSis is travelling since November, last known in Laos. last on WhatsApp at 2:00 (GMT) on 24/02/18. Last few messages showing as unread. This is out of character. I have also sent messages via Facebook and email expressing my concern in case phone is lost, as she also has a tablet.

I have an anxiety disorder and both our parents have died so I'm hyper anxious about her safety. I convinced myself I was paranoid until her best friend asked in a group chat if anybody had heard from her.

If somebody is abroad how long should you wait to report missing?

Somtamthai · 17/02/2018 13:23

Hi,

I live in Thailand and there have been WiFi issues lately which could also effect Laos. Was she travelling over the border? This takes forever. Laos also is prone to power cuts. There’s a 7 hour time difference.

While a lot of places here and in Laos are very developed.. said me aren’t so there’s no WiFi, little electricity etc.

I wouldn’t worry yet but the first step is to contact the embassy. Also find groups on fab with her last known location. Backpackers and expats are great for sharing info etc.

Good luck co I hope she contacts you soon with tales of a great adventure.

. Hope you have heard from your sister sillyjelly

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 17/02/2018 18:34

I hope she's turned up safe and sound :)

ChasedByBees · 17/02/2018 18:43

I hope all is well OP. Anxiety sucks.

Sillyjelly · 17/02/2018 20:34

Sorry, irresponsible of me to update.

As predicted she turned up safe and well! She had wandered into the sticks, found a homestay with a village chief for equiv. £1 a night and stayed an extra night!

All very exciting, I downplayed my anxiety over it as don't want to impinge on her fun. She joked "don't report me missing!" ...hah, I said "wouldn't even think of it"

...but I did insist on photos of her passport as I've since learnt this is useful info when reporting...

So happy for you. Glad everything is good and Sis is well ! It’s a tough gig getting the balance right. You can always show her this for a giggle when she returns safely.

mygorgeousmilo · 17/02/2018 20:54

RandomMess · 17/02/2018 20:59

That's fab Grin

picklemepopcorn · 17/02/2018 21:02

Good news. I've been keeping an eye out to see if she turned up.

PinkAvocado · 18/02/2018 16:25

Good news! It isn’t easy once anxiety creeps in.

Jux · 18/02/2018 18:34

Oh good, glad she's safe, and well done for keeping your anxiety to yourself - nothing worse than knowing you are making someone you love worried, it's quite stifling and can spoil things quite easily. Good idea to take the photo of the passport,a nd no harm in asking for that.

Hope she continues to have a briiliant time and continues to be open and adventurous and to love her life! And you, too!
