To ask which names sound snobby in the English language?

I am just interested because I found the Chevy names thread interesting.

I have a friend called Annastasia, who is part Russian part Eastern German. She has been told her name sound snobby and wannabe in the US/UK, while in Russia it is very common and in what was Eastern Germany it is not to uncommon.

CarelessClaire · 16/02/2018 16:45

Virginia
Cornelius

MerryMarigold · 16/02/2018 22:18

I don't think we've had JAGO!

52FestiveRoad · 17/02/2018 13:41

Is Bunty a short form of Elizabeth? Like Binky is to Bianca?

LaurieMarlow · 17/02/2018 14:17

Ralph pronounced Rafe I know one. he's proper pukka Irish

Out of interest, what does this mean?

Itmakesthereaderreadon · 17/02/2018 14:25

Our cat is Ralph pronounced Rafe. He's not very posh though.

Andylion · 17/02/2018 15:28

Our cat is Ralph pronounced Rafe. He's not very posh though.

The average cat is more posh than most humans. Grin That’s for another thread, though.

MerryMarigold · 17/02/2018 16:12

My cat is called Binky. How posh is he??? even though it's a girl's name

Cellardoor23 · 17/02/2018 16:43

I know a Tarquin. I sometimes find it amusing when it pops up on these kind of threads. It doesn't sound snobby to me. Never knew it was a 'posh' name either until I saw it mentioned on mn.

I also know an Anastasia. I don't think it sounds snobby. I like it.

Binky is a cute name Smile

PancakeInMaBelly · 17/02/2018 16:46

Names that are used in jest:
"Little Timmy/Talulah"
Tarquin
Timothy
Giles

Theyre all actually fine/nice in real life but are often used in characatures of posh people

YouTheCat · 17/02/2018 16:52

I always thought Binky was Death's horse.

OneOfTheGrundys · 17/02/2018 16:55

Gervase.
Johnny.
Will.

BlurryFace · 17/02/2018 17:20

What I find interesting is that there are definitely some names that sound a bit posh until/unless a common pet name is used.

Elizabeth - Liz, Lizzy, Betty
William - Bill, Billy
Francis/Frances - Frank, Frankie
Richard - Rick, Ricky
Alfred - Alf, Alfie
Charles - Charlie

And for a couple of these names the shortened version is its own name now - Frankie, Charlie and Alfie certainly.

throwcushions · 17/02/2018 17:20

All the proper old money posh people I know stick with classic royal names. Elizabeth, Charles, Henry, Catherine, David, James etc. Especially for boys.

Cranberrywensleydale · 17/02/2018 17:30

Perry
Johnty
Cornelia
Arrabella

ReelingLush18 · 17/02/2018 18:09

throwcushions I totally agree!

Can't say that I think 'Perry' is posh though. Some of these 'posh' names sound pukka American to me - Cornelia, Virginia and Cornelius.

I've known people with surname Jago but never first name.

By proper pukka Irish I mean the land-owning gentry if that helps?

52FestiveRoad · 17/02/2018 18:32

Perry- '' Hello missis Patterson'' from Kevin & Perry. Can't get past that!

thenettyprofessor · 17/02/2018 18:36

I have a Zara Celeste Alexandra and I love her name.

CarelessClaire · 17/02/2018 18:39

The state of Virginia was named after England's Queen Elizabeth I. In the early 1600's, all of North America that was not Spanish or French was then called "Virginia" in honor of "The Virgin Queen," and the earliest English colonial expeditions were sent by the Virginia Company of London.

LemonShark · 17/02/2018 18:50

Does anyone else bloody love these threads as inspiration for authentically naming their Sims of different classes? 😂
