To ask what she spends £300 a month on?

My friend and I were talking about our monthly outgoings. She works one day a week in a shop and her dp has taken a huge paycut to do something he loves. She said that he gives her £300 a month for food. They're veggie (she's vegan) so I really don't understand what they spend all that money on. My food bill is less than that and we eat meat (good quality meat) and have cheese etc. My plan if one of us lost our jobs was to go vegan and eat big veggie stews and curries all week,so how come she spends so much?
She did ask for my advice so should I tell her that I think she could cut down on her food shop.

As a vegan she will have to eat a lot of seeds and nuts as well as more fruit and veg than a meat eater to ensure that she gets a full range of nutrients. Anyone can survive onlentils and rice but that's not a healthy diet.

Agree with PP, it sounds really cheap to me.

I can't understand how you are buying good quality cuts of meat regularly and spending less than £75 a week (unless you don't drink/have no pets)

Koala72 · 15/02/2018 22:43

Well a pack of hand-picked blueberries is £3.50 and if you have one a day, that's say £24.50 so the best part of £100 a month just on those ...

Koala72 · 15/02/2018 22:43

£24.50 a week

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 15/02/2018 22:44

That’s fuck all ! Petrol , toiletries , cleaning products , nut milk on its own costs a lot

Vegan does not equal cheap

We spend 150 a week for a family of 4

Woolfrai · 15/02/2018 22:50

Wow. We spend far more than that here. One vegan, one pescetarian, and two dogs. Aiming for a zero waste lifestyle too (a far as practically possible). Twenty costs of nuts, seeds, legumes, pulse etc and dietary supplements (B12, Vitamin D and Nutritional Yeast) costs us a small fortune but we think it's worth it.

Zintox · 15/02/2018 23:02

Vegan family of four here. We spend £100 a week and cook from scratch most nights. Sometimes have stuff like linda McCartney sausages and I do shop at Ocado but always buy the own brand veg etc. £300 a month is cheap!

Jux · 15/02/2018 23:02

Why does he give her money for food? Does she not have access to the household account?

Anyway, all you can do is ask her what sort of food she's buying, and then go from there.

QueenNefertitty · 15/02/2018 23:09

Gosh.

I spend about 4-500pm on me and toddler DS- including nappies, bottle or two of wine a week, cleaning stuff, and extra food for weekends when ExDP is here (Once a month).

I'm not sure why it's so much really, as just sainsburys shop/ topped up by M&S ... don't waste lots (more than we should) ....

Maybe need to reasses what we're eating!

NinjagoNinja · 15/02/2018 23:11

We eat a lot of fruit. Apart from bananas, fruit is expensive. I've just idly munched my way through a pack of blueberries - then noticed they cost £3.50!!!

LemonysSnicket · 15/02/2018 23:22

I spend £100 a week on me and DP ... it’s very easily done.

MyLovelyHorseAndNewNameNow · 15/02/2018 23:27

And so fucking what? Does she squash her boxes, that's what I want to know.

NellMangel · 15/02/2018 23:30

I used to regularly spend £100 a week on food. I've had to get much better at budgeting lately and my last food shop was about £35 - just from planning meals and making stuff from scratch (and using stuff stockpiled in my freezer). Just goes to show it's very subjective as I thought £100 was about right!

Boulshired · 15/02/2018 23:40

I have one vegan in the household, she is not only concerned about not eating meat and dairy but also ethical sourcing. As it’s my budget I adjust for the food but can not afford the ethical side. I could easily imagine a £300 plus food and cleaning products bill.

SuperBeagle · 15/02/2018 23:46

Vegans tend to eat far more fresh produce ($), meat substitutes ($) and supplements ($) than meat eaters, so it ends up being a more expensive lifestyle.
