i am nearly 50, it's just all too hard now. i can't be arsed with it.

no-one understands or cares how much you fought to get to the position you have in life.

no-one listens to you, no-one wants to hear how you saw the pixies live numerous times or that you saw depeche mode in 1985

no-one cares that the job you do now would be dam near impossible without wordprocessing or at least a typewriter that had auto correct

no-one cares that that bands you once listed to were so supercool than music nowadays

that clothes just weren't available as they are now, we actually had to make clothing we liked.

etc

I saw a shop today that was selling 'vintage' stuff to youngsters. Cure and Pixies t-shirts, that kind of thing.

I spotted at least two t-shirts I had first time round, plus numerous posters, being flogged to the yoof the same way Beatles mercy was flogged to us when I were a lass.

I didn't go in. I went to a charity tea shop and had a nice piece of cake instead.

Sad
TossDaily · 14/02/2018 21:41

Merch, not mercy. Stupid phone.

mercurymaze · 14/02/2018 21:43

they probably sell the old t shirts for £50 now

Yes caringdenise and Jane Norman was also a favourite.
I remember pre-computers, thinking Telex machines were so high tech!

Hassled · 14/02/2018 21:49

So you knew Wordperfect - but did you know the glory that was Wordstar? My computer started when I put a floppy disc in it to run Dos - that's how bloody old and weary I am. I do sort of get what you mean in terms of can't be arsed-ness - but I think you're wrong to say that people don't care about the experiences of people our age.

BestIsWest · 14/02/2018 21:50

I AM old enough to use F keys on Word. Should I worry?

mercurymaze · 14/02/2018 21:51

maybe they care for your experience hassled and no i didn't know wordstar :/

I saw Depeche Mode at Wembley Arena and it was a rubbish gig. Also saw Bob Dylan there and it was also rubbish - I think the acoustics are poor. Yes, no one is impressed that I have seen Nick Cave 7 times, in fact none of the young people I know have even heard of him..... however I disagree with your snowflakes statement. Most of the young ins I meet are hilarious and engaged and desperately want to do the right thing, and leave the world a better place.

TossDaily · 14/02/2018 21:52

I had an electric typewriter with an LED display that showed about six words at a time.

Then I got a massive word processor the size of a pc with a keyboard and big chunky monitor.

Wdigin2this · 14/02/2018 21:53

I'm a lot older than you, and stuff like this just goes over my head...who cares anyway!

Wdigin2this · 14/02/2018 21:53

PS: I saw The Stones back in the 1960's....twice!

CountFosco · 14/02/2018 21:56

I was thinking about getting a band t-shirt from my youth and looked on ebay for Janes Addiction t-shirts. They were asking £100 for them. weeps

mercurymaze · 14/02/2018 21:58

hey jackie i listened to nick cave on my way to work this week i am impressed you saw him ok i will not think all young people are snowflakes x

I saw Pink Floyd, The Who and David Bowie live in the 70s. (Not all at the sme time obvs.) Am I cool? I do hope so. Grin

LittleFeileFooFoo · 14/02/2018 21:59

Ooh, we had to learn FORTRAN! Even then I was like Hmm.
I remember being at uni and having to actually cut and paste a paper i was writing. Like with scissors and tape! Paper was hand written of course. Couldn't afford a typewriter...
I used to get guff from one proff because i didn't write very legibly.

Pericombobulations · 14/02/2018 21:59

Wish my parents had let me see Depeche Mode in 1984 - so I am envious! i had to wait until the 90's to see them live. They ROCK!

mercurymaze · 14/02/2018 22:05

wtf is fortran?

You’re trying to recall your alleged coolness and marched for everyone/everything
But yet your heap derision on special snowflakes. A daily mail fave that expression
Yet you want what?praise?recognition for marching because you’re so liberal
Stop calling folk snowflakes, and I might not think you curmudgeonly moaner

RubyFlint · 14/02/2018 22:12

OP I'm the same age as you and Depeche Mide was the first band I saw! Still proud of that but I obv don't shout about that to the youngsters, it just makes me feel old!!

Just an observation, but as we're both heading for 50 I feel I can ask, are you just freaking out about reaching that milestone? I hated being 30 and 40. I'm trying not to think about 50.

i remember my grandad saying he felt the same on the inside, even though he was getting older on the outside. I really get that now.

crunchymint · 14/02/2018 22:15

I am mid 50s and still protesting.

caringdenise009 · 14/02/2018 22:45

Return to DOS meant hometime

Knockedforsix · 14/02/2018 22:50

I'm 51 and don't give a shit. Life's hard for everyone in one way or another, it's all relative.

I saw some amazing bands in the 80s. So what? My mum and dad saw The Beatles, the Stones and Frank Sinatra.

My point is, you don't become less relevant as a person just because time has moved on. You're not yet 50, you have years of coolness left!

Queenoftheblitz · 14/02/2018 22:54

Truth is, young people are rarely truly cool. Full of hang ups and worries that usually get ironed out with age.
Even when i was young i thought middle aged people were the coolest - i loved they didn't act as if they had something to prove.

gamerwidow · 14/02/2018 22:55

Did you care about the battles your parents generation fought though?
About the sexual revolution and the bands they listened to. They were probably cool and exciting and interesting too when they were young. I’m in my 40s and listened to the pixies went to glastonbury before it was corporate went on marches etc. I don’t expect my nieces, nephews and kids to give shif though that’s not their role. They’re supposed to think they invented it all just like I did as a kid and thought anyone of 30 didn’t get it. There are still people marching and protesting and making music and wearing out there clothes they just don’t move in your circles because you are old like me. I’m happy to leave them to it.
