This isn't normal is it?

My two year old literally fell asleep halfway through supper. Just had droopy eyelids for 30 seconds then plonked his little head on the table and refused to wake up again (but he is responsive). He has no particular reason to be tired. AIBU to be worried. He doesn't have any other signs of being ill but I've never seen this before and it's quite out of character for him (usually only sleeps in the car/after prolonged breastfeeding).

When my son was 4 he fell asleep on the stairs once. I have a photo.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 14/02/2018 21:20

My DS is 3, and the other night he fell asleep while I was brushing his teeth. Admittedly he has been under the weather, but When he's ready to sleep you just can't stop him!

I've never nodded off anywhere either unless I've been extremely sleep deprived-the only time I fell asleep on a train in my adult life was after 25+ hours with no sleep. He isn't jet lagged-he's fallen into a regular sleep pattern-he just wakes late and falls asleep late now. So this would be unusually early for him to fall asleep. We considered retraining him to a more convenient time but we are about to move house and sleep patterns will be disrupted then so it didn't seem fair. There isn't really and reason why he would be so tired which was why I worried. But if it happens to other children regularly then it can't be that bad. Will definitely keep a close eye on him tonight though-God knows he's likely to wake me up at three demanding food because he only managed half his supper.

One of mine fell asleep standing up. It is normal.

Cherrycokewinning · 14/02/2018 21:23

This happens to my 2yo all the time if she’s tired or having a bad day

BlueMirror · 14/02/2018 21:25

If it's unusual for your child then keep an eye on it. Has he had a particularly energetic day?

FayJay · 14/02/2018 21:25

If he’s fallen into this sleep pattern could he be chronically overtired? A toddler falling asleep in their dinner really isn’t unusual in itself. My DD1 did it and I remember DD2 actually falling asleep standing up once. It could be that he’s sickening for a bug or something so worth keeping an eye on him but I wouldn’t be concerned that it’s an indication of anything seriously amiss.

Angrybird345 · 14/02/2018 21:42

Bit late to be eating!!!!

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 14/02/2018 21:42

I fell asleep with a cuppa lifted halfway to my mouth once. Blush

widgetbeana · 14/02/2018 21:46

Of course he did, he is 2 and it is nearly 9 o’clock. He woke at 10 this morning. Children that age need around 13 hours sleep. More if they are having growth spurt, development leap, fighting illness or have been exhausted (by Things like travel).

Regardless of wake up time it is very late for a 2 year old.

ToriaPumpkin · 14/02/2018 21:54

My 3yo, following a full night's sleep the night before, snuggled into my friend and slept for an hour in a very noisy cinema. My now 6yo was known to drift off to the reading corner at nursery for disco nap. All perfectly normal in my experience. I'm 32 and my mum still has a photo of me lying asleep beside a plate of spaghetti hoops on toast when I was small!

OutyMcOutface · 15/02/2018 00:12

It could be a growth spurt come to think of it. He is due one. Seems to be perfectly fine now at any rate.
