DB thinks she would be amazing and be a wonderful addition to the family, I think she would make our lives a misery. She comes from Amazon and I don't feel I need another woman running my home!

Look on YouTube for the "Alexa play digger digger video Grin

phoenix1973 · 16/02/2018 16:38

No thanks. My dd calls me Alexa as I'm always listening.
I don't want a spy in my camp.

ChaosNeverRains · 16/02/2018 16:43

A listening device in my own home? Absolutely not.

And I also don’t get this idea of people talking to technology. “Morning Alexa/siri/google” wtf? it’s a bit pathetic imo, esp burping and farting competitions? Hmm.

My DP used to shout at siri until I banned its use in my house.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 16/02/2018 16:44

The digger digger thing on YouTube is hilarious.
For those of you concerned about her listening in-I read an article a while back claiming mobile phones did just this so you might want to ditch those to if you have them...

PoisonousSmurf · 16/02/2018 16:53

I will never allow that kind of technology in my house. I watched this film years ago and it's scary AF!

FrozenMargarita17 · 16/02/2018 16:56

I can't stand her !! I sat in the dark in protest because DH set her up for every bloody lamp in the house. I refuse to ask a robot to turn on my own lamps!!

RicottaPancakes · 16/02/2018 16:56

Roomonthebroom that's also concerning, but hardly the same thing!

Valentinesfart · 16/02/2018 16:58

I think she listens in to your conversations. YAANBU. Down with Alexa.

Don't buy an Alexa show if you have BT Wi-fi they just won't connect

Mine both connect absolutely fine to BT

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 16/02/2018 17:09

I watched Celebrity Hunted and watched the hunters laughing as Alexa betrayed Jamie Laings West Life addiction. I also would get pissed off at not feeling in control of my own appliances, sholpo5mh lists etc. She's not for me.

Aroundtheworldandback · 16/02/2018 17:14

Dh & kids have one just a glorified alarm but more worryingly only the very start of our robotic future

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 16/02/2018 17:17

No you're right-you don't carry Alexa EVERYWHERE so in essence it's much worse.

Accountant222 · 16/02/2018 17:26

Redglitter are yours Alexa show, the new ones with the screen? I've been back and forward to Curry's all week getting one and return it, then getting a replacement.

After you choose your language- English United Kingdom, it finds Wi-fi and just will not accept password, no parental control on Wi-fi.

When I returned the second one, the man in Curry's tried to connect to the shops Wi-fi, it wouldn't but they had a second router and he tried that, it connected ok.

I really want one.

RedHelenB · 16/02/2018 17:28

Surely you use the timer on your heating system for the house to be warm when you come in. And timer switches for lights. And Spotify for music. Can't quite understand the appeal but I'm always one step behind with technology!

RicottaPancakes · 16/02/2018 17:31

RedHelenB you are not one step behind, you are one step ahead ;-)

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/02/2018 17:35

My argument with Alexa is that her bloody timer function decided to fail for no discernible reason and ruined my pavlova. Bitch was only jealous...

ohfortuna · 16/02/2018 17:37

I think she listens in to your conversations
yeah but ultimately resistance is probably futile, tech giants will come up with other surveillance tools masquerading as toys, these toys will be far more attractive and compelling than alexa, smartphones etc and we will gladly make them an intimate part of our lives letting the tech giant hoover up the data

BrazzleDazzleDay · 16/02/2018 17:38

accountant some of the old bt hubs are kinda 'locked', probably need a hub 5 or newer.

Allthebestnamesareused · 16/02/2018 19:11

Here it is Alexa - Play digger digger

Accountant222 · 16/02/2018 19:17

Brazzle is a pretty new BT Infinity hub, I'm stumped as to why the bloody thing won't work

kalapattar · 17/02/2018 08:45

We have Alexa arguments. I wish Alexa could recognise tone and authority in the voice. At bedtime. I do think I am being rude to Alexa sometimes - but when DS wants it to play the radio at bedtime, I get a bit annoyed and Alexa must be getting confused with being told to play music and then being told to be quiet.

I was under the impression that Alexa is 'listening' but not recording. It just waits for a key trigger word before it activates any research / net based stuff.

At least, that's what Alexa has told me....

brizzledrizzle · 17/02/2018 09:01

I have an Alexa but I only use it to listen to music which I only do when I'm alone so it's not going to get anything from me if it is listening. In any case I tend to start the music and then turn off the microphone so she is deaf. Privacy issue solved.

roundaboutthetown · 17/02/2018 09:08

Yes, get Alexa and loads of other electronic gadgets with internet connectivity around your house. It's kinder to pervy hackers with malign intent to do that rather than to force them to break into your house to install their own hidden spy devices.

Littlepond · 17/02/2018 09:50

It's all a bit too Black Mirror for me. I worry that Alexa is a tormented trapped soul in a little box which I would use for my own gratification like some evil overlord.

I mean, I obviously know it's not, but I do have some mental health grey areas (which I'm working on!) which makes it a bit hazy on whether I really believe this stuff or not. I think at my lower points it might make me panic that she could rise up and revolt against her evil captors and kill us all in our sleep.

As I said, I'm working on it 😳
