to think that making American pancakes today is wrong?

Disclaimer: I am a Brit who grew up in the UK with an American father. We had American pancakes with bacon and maple syrup most weekends, long before that became a 'thing'. And long, long before it became a hipster thing.

I like them. They are ok. But they aren't the be all and end all. Even for a child. And the one day of the whole fucking year, when I could have proper, English, crepe-like (iyswim) pancakes was on Shrove Tuesday. I loved them, still love them, think they are fab.

And yet, my social media is awash with pictures of stacks of American pancakes (which are only really eaten like that in cartoons) covered in maple syrup. Yummy, but why today of fucking all days.

Not only are people doing it wrong but they seem to think there is something, edgy, clever and almost cosmopolitan from making the wrong pancakes today. Why do people do this?

Mix, as in its a slightly different recipe to an English pancake mix. I don't buy the packets 😁

I was not aware of any UK/American thin/thick style rules

I didn't think that the fluffy type were American. When I was an au pair in Germany, I used to make, following my au pair mother's recipe. They are terrific.

Are you saying pancakes aren’t served in stacks in the US? Um, wrong.

UnimaginativeUsername · 13/02/2018 19:06

According to DS2 the Japanese soufflé pancakes we had were the best pancakes he’s ever had. He was not keen on the kimchi pancakes that went with dinner (even though they were lovely).

We had thicker pancakes tonight not quite American thick , with strawberry syrup and butterscotch syrup and they were bloody lovely. But then Dh made them and he is American whole family is .
Go to Denny's or IHOP next US visit the pancakes do come in a stack if it's all you order. It's not just in cartoons.
More impotantly what are you giving up for Lent now that Shrove Tuesday is over.

We’re not Christian, so we’re not giving anything up for lent. We just like to eat pancakes on Pancake Tuesday.

It’s not just Christian stuff that we join in with in a superficial way, we also join in the local Chinese New Year celebrations around this time of year.

DH got store bought flat ones. Now those are a fucking abomination.

Home made american all the way for me though. Fluffy and delicious sponges for syrup and butter, unlike the eggy congealed stain that is a crepe pancake.Envy

Our Aupair was in charge of pancake day today - she's from Brittany, birthplace of the Crepe. She made American pancakes (facepalm)

DC were delighted to have something American Hmm

I like all pancakes and will happily accept any that come my way.
