To not understand what these magical hobbies are that I should have?

So I name changed for this one. I started a thread last week about how lonely I was. (I have literally no friends and am desperately lonely when I’m not at work) I got some helpful advice but I got a lot of general answers about staring new hobbies and clubs. The thing is I literally have no idea what sort of things people are talking about, I already go to the gym so apart from that what do you all do?

I play ice hockey.

Met my best friend at ice skating classes, and not as a child, both as people in our late 20s at the time a few years ago. She fell and broke her arm, I thought I'd never see her again, but she came back because she was determined not to be beaten by just falling over.

Find something the vaguely interests you and just go and out do it. I saw the hockey on TV one night, pointed at it, said "I want to be that one", here I am four years later playing in a team.

Choir
Climbing
Going to listen to music/ gigs/ festivals.
going to the cinema with partner or friends.
Learning stuff: languages, dancing, how to make stuff, etc.

What did you love doing as a child? That is usually a good place to start.

I'm quite happy in my own company and toddle around doing bits and pieces. I don't like the idea of being in a group, each to their own. I am quite content. However I do....

Walk for miles.
Discover the beauty of my city that only the tourists often see.
Mooch around the lovely markets in the city. Have coffee/tea, people watch.
Walk with a friend once a month. She challenges my stamina, when it's my turn the route is predicated on the nicest place for lunch afterwards! Nice outing just the same.
Travel. It doesn't have to be exotic or expensive. Discover our own country. It is amazing.
Have no kids so my two young nephews love being with auntie to go bowling, for pizza and a sleepover. Often exhausted after it, they are so energetic! Feeling my age sometimes!
Considering volunteering as a guide in the big historic Cathedral close by. Hmm, still thinking about that one!

Time passes with ordinary life, a book, a cup of coffee, people watching, surfing the jets, sorry the net ha ha.

But everyone is different. Some need to fill their time every day, I don't.

Butterymuffin · 11/02/2018 18:35

Writing groups if you like the idea of creative writing? Or lots of book clubs around.

NotAgainYoda · 11/02/2018 18:38

Choir
Tap dancing
Volunteering
Book group - this is probably the hardest to break into though
Swimming lessons

FlopsyMcDoodle · 11/02/2018 18:39

I started gif rowing recently and it’s great fun - it’s good for keeping fit, getting out on the sea and I’ve made loads of new friends. I’m normally the most unsociable person ever but doing sports really takes the pressure off.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 11/02/2018 18:42

Zumba
Yoga
Pilates
Various dance classes
Cardio
Knitting
Crochet

The classes are quite social, so I enjoy that aspect too.

Ragusa · 11/02/2018 18:50

There are a helluva lot of singers in choirs on here!

DorisDangleberry · 11/02/2018 18:55

Pole dancing class?
Women's rugby?
Scuba diving?
Cross country skiing?
Mud wrestling?

pancakebread · 11/02/2018 18:57

Walking, rummaging in charity shops for books and clothes, knitting, sewing/mending clothes, walking and museums. Also when kids at school and no uni class i visit different market towns which I can travel to using my weekly pass. I'm not a group person, so would go to cinema, sushi bar, cafe museums etc on my own. Love my own company - so used to doing my own thing

DorisDangleberry · 11/02/2018 19:00

Drinking heavily during the day is a completely valid hobby. You could then also take up shouting at passersby, falling over and sleeping in ditches

Greyhorses · 11/02/2018 19:01

Horses. I promise you will never have a spare moment or penny to your name again Grin

PoisonousSmurf · 11/02/2018 19:01

Geocaching is a good one. Sometimes you get to meet up with others and many people like to go out on 'hunts' together.
It's a free hobby (you pay to find certain caches), but it gets you out and about.

I’m in a running club and a women’s cycling group.

gillybeanz · 11/02/2018 19:06

Classes in Art, Flower arranging, Photography, Drama, Music, Ornithology, Campinology.
Not saying I do these things, but have friends who do.

SweetIcedTea · 11/02/2018 19:08

It's hard as a single parent, we have a few things we do as a family, and I occasionally go out with friends and get very drunk. It's virtually impossible to commit to being somewhere at a set time every week on my own.

BubblegumFactory · 11/02/2018 19:13

I joined a women’s running club about 3 years ago.
There are always new people joining, some friends of women in the club, some have seen us out running and looked us up on the net etc. Before you know it, you are chatting away to a complete stranger and after a few weeks, you feel you know each other better and you might meet up for a coffee, for lunch ...
it’s easier than you imagine.

redexpat · 11/02/2018 19:20

Zumba
Choir
Guides
Occasionally a bit of sewing

gillybeanz · 11/02/2018 19:22

You can do anything you like.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/02/2018 19:27

I read a lot. And cook food that is far more extravagant than it needs to be for a midweek supper. That's my hobby Grin

Adrianflank · 11/02/2018 19:27
