To ask how you're a 'financial Jekyll and Hyde'?

I picked up my DD from a friend the other day and we got talking about our day, I told her I'd been to get my ancient boots reheeled and seen a boat I wanted to buy. She immediately burst out laughing saying that was so typical of me, the financial Jekyll and Hyde who buys massive sacks of rice to save money and then spends the saving on a lobster, or goes camping for a holiday and then buys expensive wallpaper.

Now, I'm not offended in the least, but AIBU to think that most people in the financial 'middle' do this - skimp on one thing to save up for something else that is important to us? What do you save and splurge on?

Its wasteful to throw clothing that's still perfectly mendable / wearable.

And yes most people do skimp on something to afford something they really want.

I buy second hand clothes from eBay and the cheapest of most things in the supermarket. I spend money horse riding.

That's how I live - save money in certain areas in order to spend more in others. I don't see the issue...

OP - you forgot to write 'light hearted' and seem to have struck a nerve!

I think nothing of ordering cocktails that are £10 a pop, but hum and haw over delivery charges for online shopping.

There are certain brands i can’t scrimp on - Heinz etc, and I don’t feel guilty about treating myself to a pricey cocktail once in a while..but in other ways I will be hugely frugal! Hunt around for deals on food, wear clothes until they’re rags, keep napkins to use as tissues, it’s funny how your brain categorised certain expenses as ‘way too much’ and others as fine! For example I would probably drop £15-20 on dinner out - but I think £6 washing powder is a Rip off!!

@Userplusnumbers god, I bloody hate delivery charges!! I always spend more, just to get the free delivery!

I’m about to go on my second skiing holiday of the year, but I won’t pay for car parking unless it’s unavoidable, no way .

I spend a fortune on expensive food in the supermarket and buy my clothes on ebay - makes sense to me!

And I never buy branded soap powder.

Agonised for weeks about spending £60 on annual zoo pass then spent the same in 1 day on lunch at cafe and a takeaway dinner because I was lazy

DH and I drive about in 15 year old bangers, neither of us have bought any new clothes in about 5 years. But happily spend £15k on a summer holiday to somewhere far flung and exotic.

I try and be frugal and conscious of money, our budget on food etc. Will only eat out if we have a budget. But just spent £80 on a bottle of aftershave for DP.

I will happily walk a couple of miles home from a friend's house at midnight to avoid shelling out a fiver for a taxi, but will pay silly money for posh wool to knit with!

I'll spend £50 in Sainsburys, then cram the shopping into my handbag to avoid paying 5p for a bag

I'll buy all my clothes on eBay, but think nothing of spending £40 on a th-shirt for ds's.

I agree about not paying for carrier bags. I'll happily shell out for cocktails on a night out but I won't pay for parking.
I also turn the heating down to save on my bills but love to buy coffee and cake in cages.

Regarding everything and I mean everything
Food cleaning toiletries - I look for all the offers 3 for 2 buy one get one free etc have a nice little collection in my cupboards, when I get down to the last one of items I use/need it goes on my list that I keep in my kitchen.
When meats on offer beef lamb etc I normally buy several joints in the freezer it goes. The amount it saves is amazing
I do like my designer clothes bags shoes etc, again have never paid full price always seem to find great (brand new) bargains

I strop about the price of laundry soap and online delivery charges, I scrimp on own brand squash and I think very little of buying another implement or improvement for the stables or a new collar for a dog.

Well I doubt boat purchases are contemplated by many people, but yes the principle is quite widely applicable. Most people can't have everything they want, and I suspect even those who can probably have things they get really pissed off about paying for.
