and can't understand how so many people on Facebook have it so completely wrong (and can justify it to themselves).

Without adding your reasoning, tell me what you think the answer is.

It's $10. He sold it first for 70 and made 10 profit. He then lost 10 buying it back for 80 and made a further 10 when he sold it for 90

daisychain01 · 12/02/2018 19:07

He's just a bloody time waster, and that poor horse must have an inferiority complex being bought and sold so many times

I'm reporting him to the RSPCA

XmasInTintagel · 12/02/2018 19:10

Or if there are 3 party bags, and 3 DC. 2 bags have a single sweet, and the 3rd has a chocolate egg.
What if DC2 doesn't like chocolate though ;-)?

But apart from that, I think this analogy is easier to think about than the goats :-), thanks.

3out · 12/02/2018 19:12

For those concerned about how the man manages to pay for the horse the second time when he seemingky doesn’t have enough cash - it’s like Lovejoy. He’d already sold the horse for the second time before he even bought it back. Lady Jane is furious with him, but she knows what he’s like.

Nelly1727 · 12/02/2018 19:14

20

tolerable · 12/02/2018 19:26

he made $30. original cost was 60.final sell was 90. ... i think. but i also consider "ish" to be a number

tolerable · 12/02/2018 19:27

oh buggeration..i reasoned. im sorry. #fuckthiswholeday

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 12/02/2018 19:30

Thank you Weird. I know the answer to the monty hall question because of the last thread we had on it but know I get it. For some reason that party bag explanation makes much more sense.

OnTheRise · 12/02/2018 19:30

The man bought the horse for $60 and sold it for $70, so made $10 in the first transaction.

He then bought it again for $80 and sold it for $90 so made $10 in that transaction too.

Two lots of $10 add up to a total profit of $20.

This is not complicated.

jayne1976 · 12/02/2018 19:30

Simply 20us

Pasithea · 12/02/2018 19:39

Unless man feeds and shoes and gets it a passport to sell it legally.

-200 quid.

Pgs007 · 12/02/2018 19:43

Up 20...

Cantusethatname · 12/02/2018 19:43

10

purplebunny2012 · 12/02/2018 19:51

He broke even

Anymajordude · 12/02/2018 19:53

Up 10.

MyDcAreMarvel · 12/02/2018 19:54

It's 20 why would it be 10 that makes no sense.

MyDcAreMarvel · 12/02/2018 19:56

When he buy the horse for 80 he has only spent 70, because he had a 20 profit from the previous transaction.
When he then sells it for 90 he makes 20 profit.

MyDcAreMarvel · 12/02/2018 19:57

10 previous profit, inconvenient typo!

quencher · 12/02/2018 20:02

He made 10 at the end

PeerieBreeks · 12/02/2018 20:07

I can't believe this thread is still going!

@tolerable - I think the time for worrying about reasoning has long since passed Grin

Hope your day hasn't been too awful though, here have Wine or if you prefer Gin

Changed my mind, it's definitely $20. I was being thrown by the loss of $10 for buying it back.

Imagine he buys it the first time with all his money. $60.
Buys for $60 = $0
Sells for $70 = $70
Buys for $80 = $-10
Sells for $90 = $80.
$20 profit.

Let's say he has enough to include being able to buy it the 2nd time. $70.
Buys for $60 = $10
Sells for $70 = $80
Buys for $80 = $0
Sells for $90 = $90
$20 profit.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 12/02/2018 20:10

I can belive it Peerie. Were you here for the BODMAS thread that ran over 2 threads?

MN loves a maths thread.

MyDcAreMarvel · 12/02/2018 20:10

Quencher no he did not make 10 at the end because he already had 10 profit from earlier.

user1495656648 · 12/02/2018 20:12

He starts out at a loss by paying out $60 for the horse. Ended up with $10 cash and no horse. 60 - 10 = $50

TeaMakesMeHappy · 12/02/2018 20:16

The thing is with these sorts of things on the internet is that whilst there are some who will say they’re not good at maths so not 100% sure of their answer, there are lots of people who will argue they are right when they are wrong.
I commented on a BIDMAS one with the correct answer and was told I was wrong with an explanation of why. I replied that I was not wrong, it was a basic BIDMAS question and said that I knew this as I’m a maths teacher. I also put an explanation of how it worked. In response they told me they would hate to have me as a teacher as I was patronising and “had to be right” Hmm
