People not eating the bread off sandwiches

halfwitpicker · 09/02/2018 21:19

At a conference today. Buffet lunch served. Lots of salads and sandwiches. Noticed a colleague take sandwiches, but only ate half the bread, she had six sandwiches but removed the thick top slice of bread and threw it away, just ate the bottom bit of bread and the filling.

AIBU to think this is a waste?

She said she was trying not to eat too much bread, but there were no real other protein options Confused

Not really sure why someone would care that much about it?

lottiegarbanzo · 09/02/2018 22:04

You do realise that everything that was left over (possibly after the office gannets had had a go) was going to be thrown away anyway?

DianaT1969 · 09/02/2018 22:07

I sometimes don't finish the teas and coffees I take at a conference. Hadn't realised my colleagues might be counting, disapproving and post online later Confused

crunchermuncher · 09/02/2018 22:12

What else are you supposed to do if you can't eat too much bread and are stuck in a 4 hour meeting with no other options? As long as she didn't effectively take twice her share and therefore deprive other people I can't see what there is to get worked up about.

Jenny17 · 09/02/2018 22:24

Truth is food requirements are not being catered for. Loads of women and some men do not want to eat sandwiches but there is often nothing else. This could be reduced by offering options until then people will pick away.

idontlikealdi · 09/02/2018 23:04

The bread in my work sandwiches is very posh, but three inches thick, I don't care if it's sourdough I still can't eat it!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/02/2018 14:02

I don't get the hatred of carbs so I'd never pick apart a sandwich for that reason. I do understand that some people can't eat bread for various reasons so it's down to them what they do. As long as no one comments on me removing all the tomato from sandwiches I won't comment on someone leaving the bread. Life's too short!

exactly my issue ... Flowers

longtompot · 10/02/2018 14:25

I can't eat much bread, esp if out and about, as I have an issue with swallowing a lot of foods, esp dry foods. Its an issue that happened through stress, and I have, a year later, just about got it under control. I would prob do the same and eat the filling and the bottom and prob not the top slice. I also do the same with burgers. I even had a bratwurst at a Christmas market, and could only eat the sausage and not he huge bread roll.

BarbaraofSevillle · 10/02/2018 14:26

Another reason for not wanting to eat too much bread is that it might make her sleepy in the afternoon. Boring conference, carby lunch and darkend auditorium = almost impossible to stay awake. Maybe she wants to learn, take part or her boss is watching.

lljkk · 10/02/2018 14:30

I would do it if the only sarnies left were white bread. (hate white bread). Always lots of white bread sarnies left I find, would be tossed out anyway.

I love to gather up all the salad garnish on those sarnie trays & chomp on that. (E. Coli risk here I come)

LizzieSiddal · 10/02/2018 14:32

I do the same. Too much bread is a nightmare for my stomach.

Sandwiches are out of favour due to faddiness

Everyone now low carbs or no-carbs and "mildly disordered eating" is now the norm (ie only eating the ham or eggmayo and ditching the bread, for perceived health reasons or fussiness)

Buffets should be more veg based really, old fashioned sandwich eaters these days are rare

specialsubject · 10/02/2018 14:37

Evil carbs. Because bread and cake/smoothies/ sweets are the same thing...Hmm

MinnieMousse · 10/02/2018 14:42

I suppose it would be a bit annoying if she took 5 that she only partially ate and there weren't enough left for people who did want to eat a sandwich. If she effectively ate the 6 bottom pieces of bread, she could just have eaten 3 whole sandwiches.

Loonoon · 10/02/2018 14:44

Yes, it was wasteful but it would be equally wasteful to eat the top slice if she didn't like it or didn't want it.

Catered buffets often overdo it on carbs because they are cheap and filling and also often fail to offer any good protein choices so people have to be creative.

I am just about to hardboil 24 eggs to make stuffed eggs for a church social event tomorrow to in an attempt to correct this buffet imbalance at one event at least.

upsideup · 10/02/2018 14:44

Why didnt you just eat the bread she was leaving OP, if you were so worried about the waste?

Passthecake30 · 10/02/2018 14:48

This would only piss me off if there wasn't enough to go round. I sometimes take extras and leave the crust as I like the middle bit the best Smile

Ninjamilo · 10/02/2018 15:00

Nothing to do with you

I have never been able to tolerate bread well, and since having gestational diabetes I can barely eat it at all - so I'd have to just eat the filling, or go hungry

legolammb · 10/02/2018 15:09

I have IBS and can't do too much bread - particularly if I'm going to be in an enclosed meeting room all afternoon and needing to fart away. But I just take less sandwiches - it wouldn't occur to me to start deconstructing them - seems very wasteful, and other people who want more sandwiches could take them. I sometimes take something 'safe' with me to snack on in case I need it.

DianaT1969 · 10/02/2018 15:10

Specialsubject you should read for 3-4 minutes about the glycemic index. You'd be 100% better educated than you are now on carbs.
You seem to think all carbs are equal. Some carbs that are high on the index (creating a spike in blood sugar) do contain nutrients (certain vegetables and fruit for example). Others carbs don't contain any nutrients. White bread falls into the latter.

Blackteadrinker77 · 10/02/2018 15:12

I do this, I like to save my calories for wine.

Inertia · 10/02/2018 15:15

I’d have been annoyed if there weren’t enough sandwiches to go round. I understand people wanting to eat less bread - if that’s the case, why take 6 sandwiches? Why not just take 3 , and then fill up on the other food? Or perhaps just ask the caterers whether there was any egg mayo or whatever left over?

Jaxhog · 10/02/2018 15:15

Provided she didn't deprive someone else of a sandwich, so what?
