To move to Plymouth?

I'm sick and tired of my job in London. Someone said getting up every day was like a cheese grater to the soul, and that's exactly how I feel. I don't have time to do things like I like (without sacrificing sleep) and I live in a mouldy flat with DP. Every stereotype you can think of.

DP was looking at jobs (NHS) and saw a hospital in Plymouth was advertising and is thinking of applying for it. I'm not sure how serious he was, he said it in a kind of, fuck it, let's pack it in and live by the sea kind of way.

I've been looking at houses and they are SO AFFORDABLE! In theory we could survive on his salary alone, which is very exciting. Obviously I will want a job, but the idea is still incredible, given that we can only afford a tiny shared ownership flat in London if we were to buy.

Only trouble is, I've only ever passed through Plymouth in the train and coach to Cornwall, so I have no idea what it's really like. I don't know where to look, which areas are nice, good for schools, etc etc. No DC yet, but definitely in the pipeline for the next 5 years.

Can any MNtters (especially if you relocated to Plymouth) shed some light on what it's like to live there and which areas to avoid, etc?

Definitely not Plymouth. Go for Exeter.

the nuclear bomb is the best thing to do with this hellhole, my car was sabbotaged multiple times, and all the the polic seem to do is( f.m. ) 'gang stalking ' like theyre stasi forbers doing zersetsund all day, at least in in e.germany only 1/3 of the public gangstalked or Zersetsund for stasi, ( records open to public) in this hell hole its literally the whole town, useing the war on terror, as an excuse to gang stalk, ive no criminal record of any kind i usually drive taxi, whatevers going on in that place needs looking into, i think its full of military installations. ?

Plymouth isn't a great place to live, Plymstock slightly better but traffic is a nightmare. South Hams is nice.

I read pages 1-4 and this one, and having lived in the Tamar Valley for 30 years, WFH most of it, my view is that I like Plymouth much more than Exeter. Exeter's housing, outside St Leonards, mostly looks like a set from Corrie. Derriford Hospital functions well in the chronically IT disjointed way of most of the NHS. It's probably the most scenically beautifully located city in England. The museum is good as is the theatre, and the property is affordable. And as someone posted early on, Janners have a wicked dry humour. It offers great sailing and watersport, and if your child swims or dives competitively, then the opportunities for training in Plymouth or Tavistock are world class.

But most of the bad stuff is also true. It has some of the poorest, most deprived council wards in Europe. The education system is wonderful if you pass the 11+ but ropey if you don't. Jobs pay £10K less than the same in Exeter. The City Council is completely bonkers. But it was once a rich and important city, and I think it will be again.

I went to school on the outskirts of Plymouth and so loved there from 3 to 18. What a dump. I don’t think I’ve been back back since I left.

Lived there - not loved there
