AIBU to ask Mooncup advice *TMI warning, coz periods *

Finally bought a Mooncup after months of dithering. After a few failed attempts I managed to comfortably get it in place easily and no leaks during the day. Less period pain, easy now I'm used to it and generally very positive. But...
It's leaking overnight, woke up to a bloodbath this morning. I do have heavy periods day 2/3 of cycle. I think this is an overflow rather than fitting but I'm not sure. Has anyone found similar?
Additionally, when tipping the content down the loo and flushing some blood remains after the flush, this is fine in my own home but I think it would be difficult and embarrassing when out and about. Having to wait and do a double flush while everyone thinks you've just done a massive unflushable poo.
I really want to love it, people on here rave about it which is why I'm posting for advice.

For the flush issue - put some toilet paper into the toilet bowl before you empty the contents of the cup.

Why not wear a pad overnight on your heaviest days?

LivingInMidnight · 08/02/2018 20:16

Put some toilet roll in the loo before you sit down, it should stop the blood pooling.

Are you turning the cup after you insert it to make sure it's open and sealed? It might be that you need a bigger cup. The mooncup doesn't hold enough for me on heavy days so I switched to a fleurcup and a silja cup.

Jerryboree · 08/02/2018 20:18

Toilet roll doesn't seem to help. It sort of sinks

I was hoping I wouldn't need to, I hate pads especially overnight bit that may be the option. I guess I was expecting too much to have 'perfect periods!'

Yes turning and sealing and pelvic thrusts to make sure.

I'll check out the other brands thanks, I assumed they all held the same amount

Are you me?

I started using a menstrual cup last period and word for word I could have written your op.

Will be noting tips.

Olga81 · 08/02/2018 20:20

I use reusable pads as well overnight on days 1 and 2 as mooncup just doesn't have the capacity for me

EllaHen · 08/02/2018 20:20

I use Organicup.

MinnieMousse · 08/02/2018 20:21

I have to use pads overnight and only wear it at home as it looks like a murder scene every time I empty it!

MustRememberTheLInFingerling · 08/02/2018 20:22

I found the Mooncup wasn’t big enough to hold the volume I produced! I researched and ended up with a ‘LuvUrBody’ (I think) which solved the problem! There is a forum which I found really helpful but I can’t remember it’s name anymore - sorry

ItsAllABitStrangeReally · 08/02/2018 20:26

They don't look like they hold much........id have to use something akin to this up my foo if I ever tried to use one.

I use pads as backup on my heaviest nights too. I sleep better that way.

littletike · 08/02/2018 20:33

I have the same problem OP but toilet roll in the loo and sanitary towel at night solves the problem as someone said - I only have to wear the towel one one night a month so don't mind so much.

I hate changing it in places where the sinks are outside the toilet cubicle though!

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 08/02/2018 20:46

Tip the blood in the sink if you can. It does pool in the loo a bit.

Allthewaves · 08/02/2018 21:00

I take ibuprofen before bed and in the morning as decreases flow so cup doesn't leak at night.

Thereshegoesagain · 08/02/2018 21:05

I bought some fabric pads for the heavy days and nights. So much more comfortable than disposables too. Just bought them from Amazon.

GummyGoddess · 08/02/2018 21:10

No no, put the paper on the slope bit and pour cup onto there. That should stop the pooling.

On heavy days I just wear a reusable pad to bed as well but that's only for day one. I think because I sleep on sides and like to cuddle a pillow with arms and legs and all the leg flinging dislodges it a bit.

If you are that heavy, tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid can dramatically help. They're prescription and you take them only while you have your period.

Wickedstepmum67 · 08/02/2018 21:51

Yup, Moon cups occasionally leak a bit at night - think it must be gravity? The position you're in? I sometimes use (used? I'm at a funny age) a pad at night as back-up. With public loos, take a bottle of water in with you to rinse the cup out and assist with flushing.
