To chop my hair off!! I need a change!

Posting here for traffic as I need your help.

My hairs been long all of my life (except a short spell when I turned 20) nearly a decade on and I’m so bored. I posted in style & beauty and have been told not to cut it but I need a change! I’ve looked the same for the best part of 10 years. Help!

I love greatducks photo.
Really stylish and cool and far from Mum bob territory

Purringkittenmama · 08/02/2018 17:05

Your hair looks amazing. I wish it were mine! (Have been trying to grow it for ages and still only just longer than shoulder length)!
What about colouring it? If you don't like it it is a lot easier to reverse the damage than if you have a much shorter cut?

< heads off to Style & Beauty to read their words of wisdom to OP >

I had hair as long as yours for nearly 15 years. Wanted to get it cut but was scared incase I regretted it. Decided to have a graduated bob so was just above collar length at the back and fairly long at the front. Reasoned it wouldn't look too different at the front so wasn't much of a change plus it wouldn't take too long to grow back. Best decision I made! Loads of compliments and head feels so much lighter. Go for it - it can always grow back

Aridane · 08/02/2018 17:45

I hate the ‘you can always grow it back’ comments - it’s very very difficult to grow hair back to that length < bitter voice of experience >

HTH546 · 08/02/2018 19:03

I love your hair! It’s fabulous! I wouldn’t cut it too short!

MikeUniformMike · 08/02/2018 19:08

Don't cut it short or into a boring bob. Find different ways of styling it. Tie it up, plait it...
I liked the long style with the long fringe.

SoFuckingFurious · 08/02/2018 19:14

My hair was almost waist length, and I had it cut into a just above shoulder length graduated bob a few months ago, and I haven't regretted it for an instant! The amount of shampoo/conditioner/hair dye I've saved alone makes it worth it lol. And it is quite literally a weight off my shoulders.

But...my hair is incredibly thick and very curly, so my graduated bob doesn't look quite like it should Confused, so I'm patiently waiting for it to grow out a bit so I don't look quite so much like a poodle.

Still, I haven't regretted having it cut for a minute Grin.

Why don’t you maybe change the colour if you want a change? I had mine cut in to a bob when I wanted a change. It looked awful. It’s taken over 2 years to grow back. Recently changed colour and I have gone dark- wish I had done this before rather than cutting it all off! Your hair is beautiful by the way!!

QueenOfSpades6 · 08/02/2018 19:51

The problem with going for a new colour is that my natural hair colour isn’t something that could be matched so in order to get it back, I’d need to grow it back in, which means having roots! I’ve been warned off by many hairdressers about this. The pictures don’t do my hair colour justice but (in the most non-boastful way) it’s a lovely colour with so many colours through it, if that makes sense. That’s why I go for balayage, it means I don’t lose my natural colour.

Don’t get a bob - too much work and can look mumsy but cutting it so it sits on your shoulders is a a great compromise and looks great.

Jaygee61 · 08/02/2018 19:59

All these comments about bobs being boring and mumsy make me laugh. A head of good thick shiny hair cut into a sleek bob is anything but IMO.

Sadiebird · 08/02/2018 20:03

I wouldn’t, I think your hair looks lovely as it is!

MiniCooperLover · 08/02/2018 20:10

Do it. A friend had similarly long hair and it was really ageing (not saying that's the same for you). Always said she kept it long to stop it being 'big' and it turns out it was just that when she was young she didn't know how to style it. She cut it to a couple of inches below her shoulders and it looks lovely and has really rejuvenated her hair 👍

AlexaAmbidextra · 08/02/2018 20:33

I'm in the cut it camp. See, I really don't get the thing about long hair. As far as I can see it just hangs there looking, in most cases, very mediocre. Different if it's beautiful, bouncy, glossy hair like the DoC but then she has the benefit of a daily stylist. I think to look great, long hair takes a lot of time, effort and expertise.

Sadhairdaytoday · 08/02/2018 20:39

Hmm I have similar hair (fine but thick and half head highlights) and when I cut it into a long bob all one length it also didn't look right for me.

Could you try a graduated bob or a long bob with layering this time? If you do, come back with photos :-)
